I applied Early Decision to Wake Forest University in September, but I was deferred because my GPA for the first quarter of my senior year was significantly higher than my cumulative GPA, so the school wanted to see if I could maintain my GPA before they accepted me. I have been told that I have a strong chance of getting admitted because a friend on the Board of Trustees offered to call the admissions office on my behalf, and I maintained a strong GPA. My second choice is the University of Richmond, but if I apply Early Decision II to Richmond, then I may not hear back about Wake Forest, and if I don't apply Early Decision II to the University of Richmond, then I may not get in.

My questions are as followed:
1. Does anyone know Wake Forest's history of deferrals? Do they defer a lot of students, and do they often accept their deferrals?
2. Should I apply Early Decision II to the University of Richmond or wait to hear back if I get in to Wake? If I wait for Wake Forest, then I might miss my chance to get in to the University of Richmond.

The question becomes can you live with Richmond. if you get in? If Wake is preferred and clearly in front, you should apply Richmond RD, the theory is that if you can get in Wake, you can get in Richmond, EDII or RD.

That is only my 2c.

If Wake is your top choice, I wouldn’t do ED2 anywhere.

There are a lot of extremely well qualified students applying Regular Decision to the University of Richmond from my area, so it will be extremely difficult for me to distinguish myself in a group of approximately 25 kids all from private schools in the same city. My fear is that if I do not distinguish myself with the Early Decision push, then I will not be admitted.

When is Richmond’s ED 2 deadline? Can your college counselor report your second quarter grades to Wake and ask for a review?

It’s January 15th, but my first semester isn’t technically over until January 12th

What is the difference if 25 equally qualified students are applying, Richmond receives 1000’s more equally qualified applications, they have to turn down so many of them. You just have to make sure YOU are not those being turned down.

This is interesting to me. Can you give us more information about yourself (SAT, GPA, extracurriculars) as Wake is hollistic in their approach and may consider some things more than others. Thanks, and good luck.
I wouldn’t recommend applying ED anywhere that is not truly a top choice. We’ve seen people on this board get themselves in a real pickle when they are accepted ED somewhere and then get a better offer at a school they prefer. If Richmond is a backup choice, I wouldn’t take the chance of putting yourself in that awkward position. Good luck!
OP: Don’t answer this question if you don’t want to. O.K. here goes: Are you a full pay applicant or one that will expect financial aid. I think that is the determination that will make a difference in the regular applicant pool for U of Richmond.
Full Pay, I’m not applying for Financial aid @familykCT
That’s helpful. Can you talk with your G.C. in school tomorrow? She may be able to deliberate with you so that you can make a good decision.
@8238college can you give us your stats? Are you sending scores to Wake? I know they are test optional. Richmond can be tough so if your scores are borderline you may actually have an easier time with Wake. Some stats would help us give you some more specific advice. They are both great schools…good luck!
