We visited and loved both schools. My daughter is interested in a business major. Any observations and/or experiences as to pros and cons of either school, particularly as they compare to each other, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I’m sure you’ll get some great, helpful answers here, but I can’t resist. Don’t forget to compare mascots. My daughter wouldn’t even look at U of Richmond because she can’t stand spiders!
A Demon Deacon doesn’t seem so creepy to her. :)

sunny,

I considered both schools (way back when) for their business schools as well. Both have highly-esteemed business programs that seem to be getting better by the year. Choosing Wake had a lot to do with the holistic college experience- as much as I enjoyed Richmond and felt “at home” on campus, I just didn’t get a sense of being “at college.” Not that the spiders aren’t proud of their school, but one look at the student flow at Wake tells you how proud we all are to go to school where we do. Much of this is athletics, obviously. I’m not sure how important this is to your daughter, but I didn’t think I would care about it, and now I’m glad I made the choice I did.

I can tell you that the Calloway School of Business is “on fire” right now (as is Robbins, but obviously I’m not as tuned-in on their developments as I am with Wake). They hired a new dean (Mr. Steve Reinemund, the former CEO of PepsiCo), and he is absolutely tremendous with the students. I’m a prospective Accounting major, and the information and career information given to me so far has been outstanding. Classes are very challenging, maybe a little overbearing. But we’ve had the highest CPA test pass rate in the country multiple years, so it’s nice to know that your work pays off in the end. As I understand, our Finance and Business Administration programs are comparably strong (although, it seems to be tough finding a job with those majors). I do know that the programs as a whole are being changed (improved?) under the new leadership, though I’m not sure what all that entails.

They are completely revamping the General Business major to something that should be very special. It’s worth reading up about.

My brother also would not consider Richmond because of the spider.
Both have great business programs, but Calloway is just an excellent school, and TAce77 makes several very good points. The CPA pass rate is consistently #1 in the country and the academic quality of the undergraduate school was ranked by Business Week as #1. Furthermore, the MA in Management is one of the first of its kind in the country, and it is growing rapidly in size and scope.

Wake Forest is a school that is on the rise and will continue to better itself. I clearly am not as apprised on the happenings of Richmond however. I do think Wake has stronger overall academics, a great study-abroad program, and ACC Athletics. Richmond is a very similar school, and has a similar feel to it, but ultimately I think Wake Forest will provide you with more opportunitites.

That’s funny about the Spiders. Thanks, all, for your opinions and feedback, we appreciate them very much!
