Wake in the top 25!

Saw this thread in the College Search Forum and thought I would link it here.

For those of you who are about to start your freshman year next week - congrats and best wishes - you are going to have a great time!

I second Rockvillemom- congratulations to all you smart freshmen Demon Deacons- enjoy your first year!

RM: almost pm’ed you last night at 11 but I figured you would catch this at some point…congrats to all at Wake!!

My only question now is how high?

Top 25 is a good start though.

Now for the next step of upward mobility - Wake needs its own link on the “CC Top Universities” board! (Are you reading this, Roger Dooley?)

-fist pump-

It’s a little sad we need a stupid magazine to justify how good we are but it does feel good to finally be recognized!

I agree with blaquedude. nice recognition…but seriously rankings are quite dumb

sorry wneck- I have to disagree. Rankings were dumb when Wake was in the 30’s. Now all of a sudden they are brilliant!

Nice, Merryecho. :)

In all honesty, moving from #28 into the top 27 (there’s apparently at least a three-way tie for the last spot in the Top 25) isn’t that big a move. But I think it’s significant to note that Wake has to start in a hole in these rankings and then achieve highly in the objective categories in order to catch most other National Us. Wake is between categories - not as graduate program-extensive nor research-based as big research Us, but too large and varied to be a Masters U or an LAC. Accordingly, its Peer Assessment score will never match up to those of the traditional big research institutions, since those are the source of the peers who give the assessments.

This year, Wake had a 3.5 PA score on a 1-to-5 scale. If that score had come in at 4.0 (bear in mind that Chapel Hill got a 4.1), that would have increased Wake’s PA half a point on a four-point scale. In a category with a maximum value of 25 points, a 4.0 should add three points to Wake’s overall score. The difference in those three points this year was five places in the rankings.

woot woot! :)

Son moves in on Thursday.

Just bring your patience and you will be fine. The drive up the hill - the main campus entrance that goes past the admissions bldg - will be very slow. Once you get up the hill - people will direct you to the off-loading area for your dorm - unload quickly and have the driver park the car. After unpacking - at least last year - we went to Benson to pick up various things and then DH and S1 took a shuttle to the computer bldg to get his laptop. It all went pretty quickly. The tech guys kind of roam the halls asking if anyone needs help with their laptops or printers.

They will be selling lots of stuff on the quad - from rugs to storage drawers, etc. It’s convenient - but you can find better prices elsewhere. For example, they had 6 X 8 rugs for about $55 - we went to Home Depot later that day and bought a 5 X 7 for $19. I also advise not buying a printer right away - let him decide if he wants one first. We bought a printer at Best Buy and left son with receipt - asking him to return it if he didn’t want it. He neither used it or returned it - so it sits in its box in a closet now. He found it easier to print at the library - but different kids will have different ideas about whether they want a printer in their room or not.

Have a great trip - let us know when you return how everything went and if you have any questions.

DougBesty- Best of luck to your son- I am so glad he decided on Wake! One of my son’s best friends was in ROTC, he is the nicest young man, and had many friends everywhere at Wake. Enjoy every moment of your first move in weekend, and again, a wish for a wonderful year!

Thanks for all the warm wishes. We’re excited. Nervous. Happy. Melancholy. What a great adventure is ahead. :)

Tied for 11th in undergrad teaching.

May depend on the item. When we checked the quad sales, the prices on plastic storage bins/drawers were better than at B,B,&B. D didn’t have a rug her freshman year since there was no floor space after unbunking the beds.

I just think its funny that people are upset that supposedly the new methodology propelled us up when in fact

. The Guidance Counselor’s list is now included in the rankings, and that actually hurt us in the rankings.

Did the new methodology lessen the PA scores impact? I bet we were lower than 30th in that factor.

Yes, Peer Assessment is 15% I believe of the 25% of what it was. Honestly, as undergraduate rankings I think they should put the undergrad teaching quality in place of peer assessment and guidance counselor ratings.
