Im a junior, and im starting to think pretty seriously about applying to Wake next year....

I have a few questions though

How close is the nearest airport to visit? I live in Phoenix .. so is getting to Salem troubling?

Is there a Sports Managers program at Wake?

How accessible are the gyms for basketball pic up games and such?

How is the intramural program... student participation and also overall quality?

Lastly, ive heard negative reports of the dorms and rooms situation... are these false or are the rooms really as bad as the rumors state they are?

The nearest airport is the Greensboro airport. It's probably about 40 minutes away. Getting to Winston-Salem from Greensboro probably wouldn't be a huge problem. I do know that people without cars who are coming from Greensboro usually have to take cabs, though. There used to be some sort of shuttle service, but I heard that that got canceled last year due to not enough people using it.

To my knowledge, there's not a sports managers program at Wake, but I'm not positive.

I'm pretty sure that the gyms are really accessible, and I know that the intramural program is really big among the students, particularly intramural basketball.

Our dorm rooms are nothing special, but they're not horrible. They're livable. And then when you get to the upper classes, they're a lot better. The Polo townhouses are downright nice, and the student apartments are pretty good, too (if a little out of the way).

There isn't a sports management program, but the Calloway School does offer one or two sports management electives within the business minor.

The gym is pretty accessible for pickup games...for working out, sometimes it's a little hard to get a machine (especially a treadmill or bike) if you go at a crunch time. IMs are really popular.

the gym is very accessible; i have friends who play basketball all the time. there's also an outdoor court next to one of the freshman dorms.

the intramural program is very popular and very competitive--enough that, for instance, i think the men's basketball intramurals have an a, b, and c league.

i don't know exactly what you've heard about the dorms, but i've seen a lot of dorms at other schools and can't say that wake's are worse than anyone else's. the complaints are the same as at other schools, essentially; the complaint i've heard the most is that they're too small. the fact is, i'd say wake's dorms are a lot nicer than most i've seen. they're clean, they come with a microfridge, they have large closets, they're well-lit, they have a heater/air conditioning unit, almost all have a pretty sweet view out the windows... as a freshman i probably spoke poorly about wake's rooms, but now having seen the situation at other schools, i can really only speak highly of them.

I wouldn't worry about the dorms too much, I'm fine with mine and my actual room is probably one of the worst (no sink/smaller corner room), but I am completely fine with it. You aren't going to spend a ton of time in your room anyway.

The shuttle service still does operate from Triad International Airport to campus--I took it to and from on Thanksgiving and I took it home after Christmas break.

IM's are great. I have only done football, but it was a lot of fun.

i think you can apply to manage athletics teams. I could have swore I saw signs that said ' become a student manager for the basketball team."

Intramurals are EXCELLENT. I play indoor and outdoor soccer. Certain clubs play in the graduate student league too.. its abit more competitive. Something like 80% of guys and 54% of girls do intramurals sometime before they graduate undergrad. ( I heard this from the athetics dept)

oh and negative room reports? The people I hear those from people have bad roommates. Changing roommates doesn't look too hard ( I've seen ppl do it). I LOVE my dorm room personally.

One thing that threw me when I first heard it is that you can't request a roommate if you know someone before you get here. They pair roommates pretty randomly (they ask a few basic questions like when you normally go to bed and if you smoke and if you're opposed to a roommate who does, but that's about it). I was actually really surprised at how well most roommates work out. Of course, not everyone is best friends, but most people end up in a decent situation.
