So I am currently a freshman in college and its been a mixed bag. Ive made friends, tried things I thought I would never had, and overall have been enjoying being in a different state.

However, I also unfortunately have had trouble keeping up with my academics. It seems like at this point I will finish with a 2.9 freshman year and needless to say I am disappointed not just for me but because I feel like Ive wronged my parents. One interesting note is that it seems that for every new form of education I attend i always seem to fail the first year whether it is middle school or high school. Even with that said, I know that I should have known better and Ive learned a lot of things from this experience(calculus is evil).

As a business major, it does feel good to know that pre reqs will mostly be out of the way and I will be able to attend classes related to my major. I am not sure if I am asking for advice or any opinions but I feel if this rant be put anywhere, this site would probably be best. So if you read up to here, I am truly thankful and will appreciate any comments or advice. Once again, thanks.

2.9 is not bad. This isn’t high school any more where the institution has a incentive to make sure people pass. 2.9, while obviously not as good as most people would like, is significantly above-average for a college freshman. Just buckle down in future semesters and bring it up over time, and you will be fine.

I don’t know about companies hiring business majors, but most companies don’t ask for your college GPA.

It sounds like you have been having a pretty good year. Giving yourself time to adjust to college life is important. While your grade point is not the worst ever, you still need to keep your priorities straight and maybe give your studies a little more time. Part of learning in college is figuring out how to study and balance your life out. Obviously you are there to learn about your future career but the skills that you are going to get just by getting through college are going to help you in life as well.

Instead of getting down on yourself about grades that you are not happy with, think of ways to make them better. You are very worried about disappointing your parents when i bet they are very worried about you adjusting to life away from home.

There is so much going on when you go away to college. You already know that. You have a positive attitude and are having a good experience there. That is very important. Give yourself some credit for doing as well as you are right now. There are loads of kids that don’t function well at all. they end up going back home to the local CC (which isn’t such a bad thing really but not as fun as being away at school). Try to work on getting your grades up. Getting past those basic classes and g starting up with your nmajor classes is much more enjoyable and interesting.

i really appreciate the responses. talking with my parents will be an obstacle sense my older sibling was an overacheiver but you guys have instilled a lot of optimism. its funny to me that i start this way in any new school system but i guess everyones different. once again, thanks!

Actually they do. Why would anyone try to get a high GPA if it didn’t count for anything?

Depends on the company you are working for. Every company I’ve worked with…they’ve never asked for my GPA. However, it does help to have good passing grades. 2.9 GPA is not bad at all. Keep enjoying college, studying, and absorbing as much as you can, but don’t get wild! :)
