wake up, macalester!!

anybody? any new frosh, or parents with kids there? something to offer a prospective Mac fall 2006?

I don't know Greenmoon but I'm applying here too. I hope you do decide to get out of Jersey ( I read your post in another thread :) )

I am also planning on applying to Macalester, but I really don't know much about it. I haven't visited, but it seems to be a really great school.

I want to apply to Mac also. It's my first choice. CAn anybody tell me about their aid? Are they generous? I come from an upper middle class family, so I don't think I will get much aid.

The school is generous, I've read Macalester gives around $20,000 a year to families with incomes of up to $120,000, which I think is good when compared top other schools. They also have limited Merit aid, and since they got rid of their need-blind policy, they have become more generous with the applicants that they do admit.

Hope this helps and Mac is my realistic number one choice as well, except for a reach dream school... gasp. Put it this way, ill be THRILLED if I end up in Mac.

I'm so glad you replied- Mac is a WONDERFUL school, but my parents are worried about the aid. My mother in particular is pretty pessimistic about it. I have heard that Mac is very generous also, and I think that I would be able to get a sufficient amount of aid- at least enough to make it easier for me to get enough cash with work, supply from parents, loans, etc. I love the school very much and am willing to work my arse off to get enough cash, so you have given me another tiny ray of hope. I just need to meet with the financial aid office to talk about what kind of money I can get, but its hard when the FAFSA form isn't in yet!

I'm a 1st year and so far Mac has been great both academically and socially.

Economically, my family probably falls under lower upper class, and I initially didn't get aid. My dad appealed, though, and I ended up getting some grant money and an office work-study job. The fin. aid. dept is excellent.

When you appealed, how did that work? What did you have to do? I know that I would get a work-study job, regardless of how much aid I got, but I'm still nervous.

I suppose I should go have a chat with a fin. aid. counselor, seeing as I pretty much have my heart set on this school.

mac dean of admissions was at my school last thursday, real nice guy. according to him, fin aid is great unless you're international. HOWEVER, he did mention that this year is the first year mac will have to be a bit 'aid aware' for even citizens. but rest assured, aid will only be an issue when you're the bottom 5% applying for admissions. gl everyone!

What do you mean exactly?

Do you mean bottom 5% as far as the whole applicant pool? or bottom 5% as far as income?

he meant the bottom 5% accepted/on the border line who need aid

thanks for clearing it up.

Moocow - I was on the Macalester campus all weekend and I thought of you. How are you doing? What do you think of St. Paul.

I love it here. I have some great classes and even better professors. St. Paul is decent, but Minneapolis is a lot of fun.

My international politics and intro to islam professors are amazing. Definitely 2 of the most intelligent and knowledgeable guys i've ever met.

oh my gosh, sounds so great...

im dying to get into Mac, I hope I do (gulp). I love Minneapolis (which is weird since im from South Florida)... I hope to see some of you guys there, I will be going to interview in November.

ohh mac kids, by the way, dean of admissions also said that they'll ask the collegeboard for a copy of the essay ya'll wrote for the new SAT-yikes! good luck!

hey all Machopefuls!! (and moocow who might be in my poli class. if Bull and Teschke mean anything, to you...its me from 307)
I was part of the CC legendary class of 2005-o-rama last fall and winter, mostly i chilled in the ivy rooms... and boy, can i tell you what a mistake that was. Im so happy here, im glad I didnt get into an ivy.

Mac is wonderful
my profs are all awesome, the people on my floor rock, the classes are fun and Im learning a lot but its not too much work. the food, the food is fabulous. even and especially the meatloaf I had for lunch and dinner today. the sports programs are good, except for soccer which is great and football which is... well they are 0-7 now... the music and art programs are fabo. campus is pretty and the best time to meet people is outside when its raining .

so if any of you have questions about Mac im glad to help. I said last year that I would come back and be one of the benevolent and wise college helpers.. and here I am... :)

all the best - iplayoboe

iplayoboe - what's the orchestra like? do they have a full symphonic group?

hey guys, I had an interview (well sort of) with the Mac Director of Admissions in my area... really nice guy, saw I was excited about the school and told me some pretty neat things about Mac. I was lucky that he came down to my area, and called Mac to set up an appoinment. :)

The orchestra is a symphony orchestra, yes, i guess there are about 50 memebers, it meets tuesdays and thursdays from 445-6. its a really nice group, Cary Franklin, the director is nice, approachable and he selects music that is def college level but it sounds wonderful. there are also chamber groups and a "wind ensemble" - its really a band but we are still working on the numbers for that one, it could stand to grow. Everybody in the musical groups wants to be there and wants to play, so rehearsals are fun and we get a lot done.,
i highly recommend the orchestra as a great group to join, plus youll get credit for every two semesters you complete. i didnt know that until after i joined. Bonus
