wake vs. tufts

These dissimiliar schools are ranked the same, yet the acceptance rate at Wake is much higher than at Tufts. Is Wake really easier to get into, and if so, why?

Yes it it is easier to get into Wake. And choose TUFTS!!! it's awesome. And Boston is much better area than NC and it has a better reputation and it is great. Its one of my top choices besides Brown. To reiterate, yes it is harder to get into, but just a little bit.

Thanks. My son visited Tufts last fall and loved it. He plans to apply. We don't know if he could get in so we are thinking of other schools with good reputaitons but easier to get in. We have not seen Wake yet.
By the way, have you received the Tufts application yet? We haven't received any mail from Tufts yet, I hope my son is still on their mailing list.

Wake Forest is known for its homogenous student body, and generally conservative attitude. It is also known as "work forest" for its copious homework assignments.

Tufts is much more laid back, but still studious in its academics. I would say that Tufts is more difficult to get into, but in reality, it's the personal fit that matters most. If your son really likes Tufts, I would suggest visiting once more in the Fall, getting contact information logged in (signing in at the admissions office to let you know you came) and talking to more students. If your son really likes the school enough for it to be his first choice, I would recommend EDI if he feels this is the path he wants to take. I would not recommend, however, that he apply ED if he feels that his high school GPA could use a boosting with the first semester grades. In that case, I would wait till EDII.

Thanks snuffles, I don't think we will be able to visit again, but I will suggest to him that he contact the admissions office again, especially since he has not received an application yet. I'm concerned that his visit last fall may noy have been recorded at the admissions office. Thanks for the advice.

Actually last year Wake's acceptance rate for 09 Freshman fell from 45% to around 37%. The 09 class average SAT was 1380.

I have to say....both schools are terrific, but the weather at Wake Forest is much more pleasant than at Tufts...unless you love cold windy winters.

Tufts has a better reputation in the northeast, while Wake Forest has a better reputation in the southeast.

I'd guess they are considered about the same west of the Mississippi, though more people have probably heard of Wake Forest with the basketball team reaching number 1 at one point last year.

Both schools would like to break into the top 20 schools nationally, but neither is there yet.

Wake's student body is almost equally split between conservatives and liberals. The faculty, as everywhere in higher education, leans to the left.

It has nicer weather, a great liberal arts curriculum, ACC sports, and a fantastic study abroad program.

Wake Forest also has a new president this year who served as the former provost at Notre Dame.

Willmingtonwave, FYI Wake had a 47% acceptance rate this year, according to US Worldnews report just out!

My brother chose Wake over Tufts. He likes warm weather and the sports teams, among other things.
It's also worth noting that academically Tufts is a bit more diverse as it has programs in engineering and such as well.

Has anybody read about the new Dean for Tufts school of arts and sciences? Bob Sternberg has some very new ideas about standardized testing! This was in the Boston Sunday Globe Aug 7th.

NJ Mom:

I believe US News and World Report uses statistics that are a year old. School don't actually know the enrolled stats until the first day of classes. Some schools are using the wait list as late as August--and that would affect things like acceptance rate and SAT average.

I've heard that Wake used the wait list in May and that they ended up with a 37% acceptance rate. That won't be shown until next year in US News and World Report, though.

You could always call the Admissions Office for the official numbers. I think school starts next week. I'll be interested to see the final numbers too.

I just checked the school's website, 46.8% for the incoming class.

wake is going up and up only a few years ago the average SAT was in the high 1200's now its approching the 1400's

46.8% was for the class of 2004-2005
per
<a href="http://www.wfu.edu/admissions/factsheet.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.wfu.edu/admissions/factsheet.html</a></p>

2945 admitted out of 6289 applicants for 1121 enrolled = 46.8%.

On the WFU website, another page (<a href="http://ogb.wfu.edu/?id=2313_0_9_0_C%5B/url%5D">http://ogb.wfu.edu/?id=2313_0_9_0_C</a>) says that Wake Forest had 7450 applicants for the class of 2005-2006.

If they had over 1000+ additional essays this past year, then they could easily have chopped the accepted number under 40%.

The big question, I suppose, is whether they will have that many applications again . . .

US News rankings use the admissions cycles two years prior because the freshman classes are not set until students enroll in the fall. There is no way that they could come out with the publication for the fall of 2005 using the 2005 stats. Therefore, I am assuming Wake Forest's acceptance rate of 47% is going to be for last year's freshman class coming in the fall of 2004.
