Wal-Mart is a disgrace to America

apparently, there is a WalMart in Ithaca.

erm...China isn't exactly third-world country.

btw here's an article I found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Wal-Mart

My town of ~1,500 has a Walmart :), despite the fact that there was already one 20 mins away. Still, I don't mind saving 20 minutes haha.

aren't there a lot of Wal*Marts in China?

You have a town of 1,500 w/ a WalMart, and there was already a WalMart 20 minutes away? Are you serious?

We got a WalMart about 4 years ago, and I live in a city of 10,000 (30,000 in city + surrounding area)... My WalMart pretty much services half of Northern Minnesota...

There isn't a WalMart for miles here in the part of NJ where I live. There one or two K-Mart's and Target's, but beyond those you won't find anything of the sort. I guess since the area I live in is ridiculously wealthy WalMart wouldn't survive.

so from what I gather from whats been said in this thread, WalMart sells stuff at bloody low prices?

exactly right

On a purchasing power parity basis Wal-Mart has a per capita GDP of $6,300. That's better then most of Africa but still third world.

And none of us are going to stop you. :)

I go to school in Plattsburgh, NY.
The only store here is Walmart.
We don't have Target - I love Target
or Starbucks
or Nordstroms
or Circuit City
or Safeway, Food Lion, Giant...
sigh

Anywho:

Our class just finished watching the movie "A high cost to a low price", and if you haven't seen it go and watch it. Wal-Mart is the hugest corporation in America and it's so corrupt and fake it's sikening.
Wal-Mart discriminates against women, they don't give benfits to part time employees, they oppose unions and use cameras to watch their employees, they don't provide security at their parking lots and a lot of robbery and theft happens, they pollute the environment, they don't pay their employees for overtime, and they have sweatshops in china and these people work 7days a week and get paid 10c an hour. Also, the taxpayers pay for the Wal-Mart employees benifts, and Wal-Mart destroys communities.
It is so sad how Wal-Mart is so corrupt, and it makes me want to cry for the people who work this hard labor. The movie even said that sometimes the assistant mangers would change the employees hours and make it seem they were working less, and these people who have a family to feed are getting a really low income. Wal-Mart is being suied in 31 different states and they give really little money to charity. All their commericals are fake, and are not true. It makes me so mad how our own government can't do anything. Wal-Mart is a monopoly and its disgusting wht the corporation does. America has a lot of problems, including the government, I'm moving back to Africa when I'm older. But anytime you see something said "made in china" think of the hard working people that make that item. Don't shop at Wal-mart or Sam's Club bc Wal-Mart owns Sam's Club...arrgh I'm so mad

I'm glad that you developed a strong drive towards a cause, a lot of people lack that. But you're taking a majority of your facts from a biased source, you need to research all sides and come to an opinion on your own, not the one the documentary builds for you. You need to be well-informed from more than one source than a documentary.

Then if you still feel the same way, become fully active in your endeavor, not just ranting on a forum.

Anyway, good luck :D

"WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price", was co-produced by my brother..he also produced, "Uncovered: The War on Iraq" and "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism."

"The only store here is Walmart."

One of the many valid points the movie makes: Walmart doesn't give people a choice. They destroy communities, small businesses, and people's lives. Sure, you can say it's a just a "biased documentary" but good luck trying to refute the many, many supported claims the documentary makes proving the evils of Walmart.

Walmart helps the working poor by lowering the price of necessities. Walmart is the pinnicle of the glory of American capitalism

Wal-Mart provides millions of employment for people. If the Wal-Mart suddenly went out of business in my town, many people would lose their homes and not have enough food. You are a hypocrite OP. I am sure you have shopped at Wal-Mart a few dozen times.

"You are a hypocrite OP. I am sure you have shopped at Wal-Mart a few dozen times."

no. I am proud to say I have never shopped there.

"If the Wal-Mart suddenly went out of business in my town, many people would lose their homes and not have enough food."

^^talk about a slippery slope. no..before walmart came in and destroyed communities and robbed them of their identiy; there were small businesses. Those businesses provided jobs just as walmart does. But I'm sure those jobs actually provided health care for their employees instead of forcing them to apply for medicaid.

"Walmart is the pinnicle of the glory of American capitalis"

You are just another greedy republician. No sense in trying to reason with you...

Those businesses were inefficent. It's unfortunate that Walmart was more competive then they were. Unskilled workers do not deserve health insurance. Medicaid is unconstitutional and should be abolished.

Or you could say Plattsburgh is a small town that no big businesses care about enough to build their stores here, and wal-mart is the only one smart enough to do so. They didn't become a monopoply from not being wise.

Nor did I say the documentary was wrong or right, pay attention, I said that you should do your own research and not depend soley on one source.

"Nor did I say the documentary was wrong or right, pay attention, I said that you should do your own research and not depend soley on one source."

The film is a collaboration of sources..and I trust the people involved in making this documentary..my brother, robert greenwald, etc.

The purpose of this film was to educate viewers and to encourage them to take action to make walmart a better corporate citizen by improving the way they treat their employees..

Now, if after seeing the documentary you want to immediately label it as "liberal propoganda" then that is your right to do so...and if you want to say things like, "Unskilled workers do not deserve health insurance" then I pity your lack of empathy.

This is liberal socialist propaganda. Period.
