Walk-in auditions

Hello! I was just wondering if anyone here knows if PSU allows walk-in auditions at the Chicago unifieds? Thanks!

My D (last year) did a walk in for PSU at the New York Unifieds and it was a great experience. She did have to wait until near the very end of the afternoon, when the rest of the kids (who had signed up ahead of time) had gone, but they shoehorned her in and gave her ample time and what's more, she got in!

There will be walk ins in Chicago. I will be the monitor...my name is Casey. Come see me first thing in the morning if you want to try to do a walk in.

Do you have to already applied in order to be able to have a walk-in audition?

No, you don't have to have applied. However, you will need to apply ASAP when you get home and you will also have to quickly contact College Board to send your SATs, which can also take time.

psucat can tell you if this is a good idea or not, but my D brought with her to her walk-in auditions a copy of her high school transcript (sealed with the guidance counselor's signature across the closed flap) and a resume and headshot.

Also, make sure to research PSU's audition requirements ahead of time, so you know what kind of songs you need and what cuts. Make sure to have both 16- and 32-bar cuts, so that if (at the last minute) they ask for a shorter version, you have it.

Most of all, do your best to relax and enjoy the process! PSUCat and the other PSU audition assistants are amazingly nice and their friendliness will put you at ease.

I don't have anything but fantastic things to say about the PSU audition process at Unifieds, from the people behind the table to the auditors. It was all good for my daughter. I think it will be for you, too.

according to the PSU website, both songs should be no longer than 90 seconds. It doesn't say anything about bar cuts. Should I still cut my songs into 16/32 bars?
But the thing is, the one song I have that is pre-1960 cannot be cut into a 16 bar cut.

clay, does it say that they shouldn't be longer than 90 seconds together?

The reason I advised about the cuts is because someone told me that at NYC Unifieds last year, her daughter was told at what was essentially the last minute that she had to sing only 16 bar cuts, and the girl was left scrambling to do that. So having the cuts available already might be helpful. I actually don't remember what cuts my own kid used, but I do know she had 32- and 16-bar cuts ready.

As for your pre 1960s song, I think the idea is to get it to as close to 16 bars as possible. But perhaps psucat or someone else with more expertise than I have can comment on this. I don't want to lead you astray.

We will ask you to cut your songs down because you want more time to talk and relax instead of singing long songs and cuts and taking up all your time with the faculty! Cut your songs down to 32 bars if possible. Don't panic, if you have you no idea how to cut it, I will be there and so will a classmate of mine, Natalie, to help you. We are experienced bar cutters ;o) Come see us in the morning!

Hi psucat!
I am going to be at the Chicago unifeieds Feb. 4....will I be able to walk in that day?
thanks so much!

Does PSU allow walkins at the NY unifieds?

Mamastan, they did last year, but it’s all dependent upon availability, of course.

Hi! I am an alum of PSU MT ('07!) and have run the NY Unifieds for the past couple years. We do allow walk-ins, if time permits, by a waitlist. Its usually a very tight squeeze and we start a waiting list at the very beginning of the day. Your best shot is to try to sign up on our waitlist at the start of the day and keep checking back!
