Walk-on Sports???

I know Williams is a big atheletics school, but is everyone recruited? I'm not even just talking about the varsity teams, but jv and club as well. For example, my high school does not have a crew team, but I erg a lot and my friend is planning on teaching me to really row with her team, so if I do go to Williams, I might be in decent rowing shape. But could I join the team? Are there tryouts? Or are non-recruited students relegated to club sports and intramurals?

From my understanding, you would have an opportunity to join the team.

Finally mythmom says something that is correct from all viewpoints. Yes the crew team does allow walk-ons, in fact they encourage it. The fact that you are preparing by working out is great. The other teams though rarely allow walk ons. As crew is one of the least known sports (composing only 2% of student athletes in the United States), many people go into college without knowing that rowing is a sport. Thus, if you are willing to put in the time and commitment, you will do well with that team. However, other sports like the swim team, basketball team, and football teams do not allow walk-ons. Generally, the teams that do allow walk-ons will advertise in the beginning of the year with posters all over the place. If you don't see a certain team advertising, no walk-ons.

like track and cross-country.

I mean, they certainly encourage as many as possible to try-out. Huge teams, but of course, not all are varsity.

so track and cross country do allow walk-ons? Because I would also be interested in trying those too. too bad about swimming though...i never knew it was so competitive since the teams are always so large!

So no athletes are given the chance to walk-on in football? That is disappointing.

I also would like to know if they allow walk-ons for track or cross country.............?

Jrock's posts addressed track and cc

What about soccer?

are things different for JV??? How competetive are club spots? Intramurals?

Yeah, I was thinking that club/intramurals would be the way to go for me.

"too bad about swimming though...i never knew it was so competitive since the teams are always so large!"

There have, in fact, been walk-ons on the Williams swim team over the past few years (including this year). It would be best to speak with the swim coach when you arrive on campus for the fall semester.
