Anyone know anyone who actually did get on a team "walk-on"? Some other parents asked on another thread, and I thought there might be enough interest/knowledge to have a separate thread. I know no examples, but if you do, please post. You should be really sure, tho, not just rumor.

Yes – Men’s soccer at a top-four NESCAC school. Student had top club and state champ HS experience, but didn’t commit early and wasn’t on coach’s list. After some weeks on JV team, was moved to V and has gotten playing time. Not a starter, but definitely a contributor this year.

Yeah I know quite a few people who did for tennis.

I made my NCAA Div III school’s basketball team as a walk-on back in the mid-90s. I had been recruited to run XC/Track and was worried about Academics, so didn’t run Fall of freshman year. I was bored so I tried out as a walk-on with a friend (she was 6’4 and I was 5’3) who was asked to try out even though she hadn’t been recruited. I ended up making the team (she didn’t) and played for two years. I honestly didn’t see much playing time, but traveled with the team and enjoyed it generally. The tough thing is often the coaches have a lot more invested in those players they recruit, so it can be tough to break in. Ultimately, it was so time consuming that I gave up and went back to focusing on running and spent the next three years doing that.

Thanks for this thread! My daughter may be in this position w/one college she is applying to…coach told her she has her identified recruits and welcomed her to try out.

Royal, Nice to hear from you.

Happy for your son. Walk on a NESCAC varsity team is not easy task at all. This is the lesson someone have to recognize. GOOD JOB!

My one is taking an easy route as you know. Good luck for you and your son.

Be carefull, radannie. The coach my son spoke with told us that they tell kids they can try out, but actually have no intent of letting them on the team since the team has already been chosen. I would hope it’s not like that across the board, but since it is for my son’s sport at one specific school, I imagine that it is like that for some other’s as well.

Friend of my S cut from his team at Midd “because a walk-on was better”(freshman) Now there’s a ringer for you! And what a disappointment…for young man A (and thrill for young man B)

Yes, thanks for this information!

I know of a walk-on at a NESCAC basketball team this year.
