Hi, I'm intending to apply to Whitman this year..
just want to ask about the location, Walla Walla.., is it a fun and safe place?
quite a number of ppl told me Whitman was like "in the middle of nowhere"
and the fact that it takes like 5hours to drive to seattle seems to make it not a very interesting place..
so can you guys share some opinions about the school and the campus life? how the students there cope with that "remoteness"?

You might also search the Archives for this topic as it comes up every year. I am writing from a parents perspective-but it is reflecting that of 2 kids who have each been very happy at Whitman. The town is actually a small city–about 30,000 people and is the center of the surrounding agricultural community. It definitely does not have the “nightlife” of a city; the campus community though is so lively that students do not seem at all at a lack for things to do and there is more than the average interaction between town and college, relative to other rural LACs I’m familiar with (eg: lots of townspeople at music and drama events on campus, lots of Whitties involved with tutoring, local and state politics, community service, etc.) Kids who need to get to Seattle and Portland at times seem to be able to get rides with one another pretty readily and ultimately I think a lot of kids choose it because there is a kind of rural/outdoors peace and beauty with a happy community climate. If you look at the school paper you will get some sense of this probably. It is definitely safe and kids seem to have a lot of fun. There is a high level of participation in outdoor adventures–and also lots of zany on-campus fun for those who don’t want to camp, ski, climb, bike.

I would also like to add, from the perspective of a parent, that it was a wonderful surprise to find several boutique restaurants and espresso shops in Walla Walla. The bourgeoning wine industry is transforming the area.

Honestly, Whitman students don’t leave campus all that often. However, there are parties every weekend and things to do while avoiding homework the rest of the time. However, this does mean that we’ve got a great community because people aren’t just leaving to find their entertainment in the city–we all find our entertainment on campus.

It is pretty safe, though. Just don’t leave your bike unlocked.

wow that sounds fantastic :)
