Wallstreet Mentorship Program for freshmen and sophomores

I met my mentor in my freshman year. He was a high school alum who started working as I started my college life. While he didn't manage to help me land jobs directly, his constant advice was a big reason why I was lucky to have had two BB internships and will be starting on a job which most BB analyst would consider exit op after I graduate.

I promised him one thing freshman year. He told me, doesn't matter how I turn out, if I ever want to repay him, pay it forward and mentor someone.

So here I am, senior year, about to start my full time career next year. I was chatting with five friends who will be starting at either IBD, S&T , buyside, or top trading firms, four from COE and one from LSA. I was just talking about my mentor and it snowballed into a mentorship program we have in mind.

Right now we haven't even started our career yet, and it will be another year or two before we would be able to have a solid network and slightly more say in the application process at respective firms (it is commonly known that first round is usually guaranteed for people recommended internally even by analysts).

Therefore we want to recruit mentees from either the freshman or sophomore class. We will grow with you. As we grow in the industry, you are growing in college. The goal is that when you aproach full time recruiting, we will be second year analysts at various places where we might be able to pull some strings and make referrals (assuming that you turn out to be a normal person of course.)

We will guide you in how you approach your job search, help you network, utilize our network to help you get interviews, help you prepare for interviews. We will not promise to be able to get you a job, but we promise to help you maximize what you can get with your qualification. This is also not just about landing you a gig. We want to stay as a network.

Who are we looking for
We are not looking for someone with a 4.0 who interned at goldman sachs a a freshman, nor are we looking for someone whose father is lloyd blankfein and has the inside track. We want to help someone who has done their homework, has the drive, has the passion, and is obviously reasonably intelligent.

Conditions
There is no cost to the program. However, we do ask you to pay it forward and be a mentor for the program in the future when you land your gig.
We also ask that you respect the effort put forth by mentors, meaning if we use our network/referral to get you an interview, please make sure you don't cancel it. If we revised your resume and tell you to send an updated copy, please send ASAP. We also do ask you to keep us posted on your job search process when it comes time.

Eligibility
You must be a Michigan freshman or sophomore to apply. We can't accept juniors because we wont be of much help to you. If you are a junior you should be going through SA recruiting by now, and we will have started for about a month or two when you apply for full time and we wont be able to help much.
We prefer non-bschool kids, just because we all know that COE is disadvantaged when it comes to IBD recruiting and LSA is disadvantaged for all types of recruiting, but you may apply if you are in Ross as well.

Application Process
PM me the following:
1. Your class year
2. Your Major and GPA(if available) /past experience (if any)
3. Why should we take you, what makes you different? (a few sentences will do, tell your drive, your passion, what have you done to learn more about the industry)
4. You may attach a copy and pasted version of your resume (you wont be penalized if you dont do so, remember, we are not trying to help the most qualified/the most prepared candidate. They would get jobs anyway)
5. What front office role are you interested in? (investment banking, sales and trading or research)
6. You don't have to reveal your name at this point. We will shortlist 10 people to interview. You wont have to reveal your identity if not chosen

We do want the mentoring to be one-to-one ratio to maximize the attention we can provie. Therefore, we will be accepting 6 people at this point unless we find more qualified mentors.

If you are a senior about to start at a BB/Elite boutique/top MM/funds, or a recent grad working in one of the above and would like to help out, please PM me.

If you are an older grad who would like to contribute, be part of our network, guide us or anything that could help even with minimal time commitment, please do PM me.

Remember, all of the mentors in this program are already seniors who landed gigs, meaning we aren't doing this to pad our resume. We are in, we don't care about the glorified mentorship on resume crap. We truly want to do something for Michigan.

If you like this idea, bump up this thread when it starts falling so more people can see it.

This is definitely a great oppurtunity for whoever is interested.

That said, Tentai, send your app quick!

I think it’s great what you’re doing.

best of all, you even get to finally meet bearcats in real life!

I think this is a rare opportunity and have sent in my application.

GO Blues!!!

Bearcats,

I sent you an application, but I think College Confidential may be glitchy because it’s not showing up in my “Sent Items” folder. Will you please let me know if you received it?

Now that you mention it, it’s not in my Sent folder either. Hm.

Nevermind, when you send PMs you have to check a box in order for it to show up in your “sent items” folder, so you probably just didn’t check it.

Got 10+ applications since this morning. I was gonna list it on career center connector/engenius as well but we might just be able to fill our mentee class with CC people at this rate of applications coming in.

I suppose most people on CC are the ones who are willing to do legwork, take initiative… i mean that’s the reason why you guys are on CC in first place right? :-p

Anyhow, the application will close in a week (or sooner if we reach 40 applicants before then). You will be notified whether you move onto the 10-person interview shortlist or not, from which we will select 7 people (We expanded the class size to 7 because we found another mentor who’s currently a first year IBD analyst who so happened to bump into this post)

re nubswitstubs: I got it

bring this back up

BRING THIS BACK UP. 20+ Apps now. Applications will close on the 18th or when we reach 40 Apps whichever comes earlier.
