Typical ECs: Red Cross (Club, Leadership Camp, Council, TV appearance for fundraising, etc.) 200-300 hours of volunteer work, Mentoring @ School (leadership positions), X-Country (varsity + Most inspirational), Art Club (State PTA Reflections), +1-2 other in-school leadership positions + in-school awards

For top LACs like Amherst, Wesleyan and Swarthmore, on top of your scores/gpa you have to demonstrate fit with the college. Your essays and especially the 'Why college x' essay will be very important. You have a good gpa, SAT score is in the mid-range for the top LACs. You should research these colleges well, put together a thoughtful application and wait and see. Applying ED will help you as well. For example, Swarthmore has a 45% acceptance rate ED and a less than 18-19% acceptance rate RD. But don't let that 45% rate fool you, they still take the best candidates and there is a lot of self-selection that goes on there - must like University of Chicago.

If you do all of the above, you have a good chance. At the top LACs, the worst mistake you could do is just send an application because the college is in your 'list' and it is something to do and you did not really research the college. That is a surefire way of getting rejected. I know of many kids with 1600 SATs and top grades getting rejected because they blanketed the ivies and these LACs with applications using the commonapp.
