LOYOLA NO vs Rollins College FL- want a small school!
I want to be a doctor and am planning to major bio/premed at LO NOLA or 3/2 accelerated business program at Rollins.

I have a 29 ACT score, retaking hoping to get in the 30's and have been told by my counselor that i have a chance at any school I want due to my GPA and class rank.

Thoughts? Recommendations for another more prestigious small school? I want to be surrounded by well-rounded people, not rich brats.

I definitely recommend Grinnell College, it is small and prestigious…but by no means preppy. They have solid biology and biochem programs which will act as a foundation for your future MD or DO, and an added bonus is that there is a regional medical center only a few blocks from campus.

You might want to bring up your ACT into the 30 range, and I think you would be a shoe in!

You should also look at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. They have a first-rate pre-med program and an excellent record for placing their graduates in medical school.

I totally agree about limiting your undergrad debt. I know docs in their 40s who are still paying off their med school.

If you are set on a LAC, are Rollins and Loyola NO the only choices? Do you want to stay in the South or would you go elsewhere?

Our friend’s daughter went to Rollins and came back after 2 years (gave up a full scholarship) because she thought is was a country club school for rich east coasters who weren’t very good students. Lovely campus though. I have been looking at Loyola NO for my son, but he is more interested in the arts side of that school, so I can’t comment on their pre-med program. Certainly the location is wonderful, the Jesuit education is well rounded and I like the fact that there is a good mix of artsy and pre-professional folks.

Have you considered the pre-med at Rollins vs the 3/2 business program? You can read more about it under the academic pre-professional page. You can probably get some scholarships with your scores but with an increase you can probably recieve much more. I don’t recall the top scores to become a candidate for a Cornell scholar but it would need to be much higher. Two of my kids go to Rollins so pm me if you would like more specifics about the college.

Ohio Wesleyan U. has over 80% acceptance rates to med school. I think you may be able to get some good merit aid and keep your debts down for the remaining years of your education to become an MD. It’s still a well respected school although not very high in the rankings. Academically very challenging and I think you’ll like the student body.
