I am a freshman, currently with a double major - art history (which I love) and one other I am really disappointed with and want to drop. Also, having had many years of work experience, I really, really want to be self employed again after graduation and Arts and Visual Technologies is one of the few majors conducive to that. However, although I have been good at some forms of art in the past, I haven't done it for many years and don't know how well I would do, but I love art. My school requires a portfolio and admission separate from the University admission, and obviously I don't have one. Is this a good plan: take one or two (would that be enough?) classes to build a portfolio (need 10-15 works), get good grades in my other classes, especially art history, and apply? Then drop my other major if I get in? If I had time I would even really like to minor in Travel and Event Management also, focus on Photography and Graphic Design, and start my own business or businesses doing these two things when I get out (hoping that minor would help in a Photography career). I don't know if I have time for all these credits but I don't think I can afford to continue on for a Masters. Should I take 2 art courses at once next semester to try to build a portfolio faster? Or should I take one and see how it goes? How many projects or "works of art" can I expect to complete in one class? And for those of you looking to start your own business, did you take a foreign language you wanted to take or one you thought would help you get more customers, even if you didn't want to take it? If I don't have time for that minor I think a couple of event management classes at least would help with this career. Thanks for reading my rambling on and to anyone that replies I appreciate the help.
