Want an ego booster? Look at my stats and chance me

State: Idaho (how much will this aid me?)
Race: Latino (how much will this aid me?)
GPA: 3.4 weighted, 3.9 weighted without freshman year. My class rank is in the top 25%, would be in the top 5% without my freshman year.
APs: US History (4), LangComp (4), and Gov (5). I self-studied World (5) and APES (5).
SATs: R - 740, M - 630, W - 680. 2060 overall.

My class load:

Freshman Year (at a difficult charter school)
-Honors Ancient History
-Physical Science
-Honors Ancient Literature
-Algebra
-Speech and Debate
-Spanish 2

Sophomore Year
-Advanced Biology
-Honors English
-AP US History
-Geometry
-Health/PE (required)
-Web Design/Money Management (required)

Junior Year
-AP Lang Comp
-Macroeconomics/Microeconomics (dual enrolled)
-Philosophy/Ethics (dual enrolled)
-AP Government
-Algebra 2
-Environmental Science

Senior Year- I could easily add more classes here.
-International Politics (dual enrolled)
-College Algebra/Statistics (dual enrolled)
-AP Literature
-Physical Geography/some social science class (dual enrolled)

Extracurricular:
-volunteer at Food Bank starting this summer
-did Speech/Debate freshman year
-did Cross Country and Track freshman year
-I'm very politically active, I volunteered for the Idaho Democratic Party in the 2010 midterms and OFA/the Idaho Democrats this year.

I want to major in Economics or possibly Public Policy. I realize that the colleges that I want to get into are monumental reaches. If you could recommend some good schools for me, that would be swagged out. What I'm looking for: great social sciences department, reasonable tuition, urban, not in the South.

I'm really frustrated because on paper I look fairly average but that's only because I knew nothing about the college process until my Junior year and wasn't prepared at all. I didn't prepare for the SAT and still got the highest score in my class. Yeah, a 2060 at my high school is amazing. So a word of advice to the lil bros out there: high school matters, take it seriously. Also, don't live in Idaho ever.

College List:
UCLA
University of Chicago (lol)
Georgetown (lol)
GWU
University of Colorado-Boulder
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
McGill
UBC

you might get into colorado. i dont think you would get into ucla either. good luck.

I’m bumpin, bumpin all day errday.

I’m mostly interested in knowing how much my ethnicity/state helps me.

I’ll chance back homies. What, do you guys dislike the thread title or something?

hmm… i honestly think the gpa is going to hurt (same for my case)
your sat is pretty good and you can improve more to better your chances…
with your ethnicity and good ec, i think you can get into most of them.
GOod luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1183488-low-gpa-any-chance-claremont-mckenna-college-chancing-back.html</a></p>

I think you need to raise your SAT score to get a better chance for admission into schools like UCLA. If you can raise your SAT score to maybe the 2200’s, you should have a much better chance (especially considering you didn’t study for your 2060). Your GPA is somewhat on the lower side, so I think you will need a really strong essay to get into UCLA, Chicago, and Georgetown.

I would recommend you pile up some more volunteer hours or more extra-curriculars (especially those that pertain to politics because you are very politically active and that may translate to something unique about you).

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1182153-what-my-chances.html</a></p>

GPA is the main thing I notice that hurts you a bit. The ECs are interesting, I’d just want to add even more depth if you can before apps go out.
Obviously Georgetown and UChicago are tough as hell to get into, so I’d definitely put them at reaches. UCLA is just really hard as a noncalifornian, and unfortunately do to it being california I can’t see being latino heliping out tooo much. But GWU I’d say say match. Unfortunately know next to nothing about the other schools in terms of acceptance rates, but being latino has never hurt a student in terms of admissions lol. Cant imagine McGill has too many latino students.

You’re set at GWU and U of Colorado, maybe Mcgill too. But for the others, I’d have to leave at reaches. You’re welcome to shoot for them though.

chance me back @ http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1183418-chance-average-student-some-good-schools-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

bumpage

Does anyone have any university recommendations for me?

Well, you see what everyone has said about GPA (trust me, I’m in your boat), but as to other university recommendations, you might want to try some of the other Big Ten schools. You’d do well at Ohio State, and depending on how far from home you want to go, you could probably get into pretty much any of the SUNY schools (Buffalo and Binghamton are the largest, considerably the best ones, or Geneseo if you’re looking for a smaller school, which I doubt)

I dont really know much about those schools other than chicago (which i am looking at myself) and Boulder (which i visited with my brother 2 years ago)

As for Chicago, i’d say it’ll be difficult for you to get in (but it might happen, you never know) solely based on their average numbers (which is pretty much all i know about Chicago)

Boulder, on the other hand, I would say you have a very good chance of getting in to. My brother got accepted there (ended up going to Colorado State University) with a fairly low GPA (not sure what exactly) and lower SAT scores than yours (720 reading, 490 math, i think, not sure about writing, but he is good at that so it was probably decent though he didn’t break 2000 total) Also, Boulder is a BEAUTIFUL town, the people there are very active and in shape, and its just a wonderful place to be.

lol i didn’t study for my SAT either and still did well

Thanks for the feedback, I’m starting to look into UW-Madison, which I’d guess is a slight reach but doable as long as I boost my SATs. I just wish there were some Canadians here who could give me feedback on McGill and UBC. Would anyone of the better ranked LACs be matches for me? I mostly just want to hop in a time machine and beat the hell out of my freshman self for not trying harder.

@ NoNameNeil From what I’ve read and descriptions, Boulder sounds like the ideal city for me, which is the main reason I want to go to school there. Good luck to you at getting into UChicago.

I love how people think ethnicity is gonna save their application. Minority ethnicity status is only considered during the last read and when applying for financial aid (it’ll help you out in financial aid ALOT may I note). Besides that race wont fundamentally help your app alot unless your grandfather ran around the Cherokee country and hunted for the white man along with buffalo or you go to a orphaned children’s school in Zambia an somehow managed to get fabulous grades and ec’s.

That’s good to know but there’s no need to be so condescending.

Sorry I didnt mean to be, all these ethnicty posters were just getting on my nerves.

Keep in mind that public schools don’t practice affirmative action and are often more difficult to get into if you’re out of state- UCLA, for instance, accepts 28% of CA residents and only 9% of OOS students. Being Latino and from an underrepresented state will give you some mileage at private schools, but you will still have to write some really, really astounding essays to get into the likes of UChi or Georgetown with your GPA. To get an objective idea of where you stand, check out Princeton Review’s average admitted student stats for each school you’re interested in.
