i am beginning my search for colleges. want to major in music performance (flute), preferably east coast but would consider mid west. smaller college or at least a small undergrad music dept within a bigger university setting. want a liberal arts education along with my music. my concern is finding a university that has a great reputation for its flute faculty. thanks!

check out oberlin. its world renowned

i have heard that it is really really hard to get into. i am good but i don't know if i am at that level. i've been all state in flute and won some awards, but i don't think i am "conservatory" level. any other suggestions?

Look at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.

St. Olaf, Bard, ....check out the Rugg's Guide.

does anyone know about the music dept at james madison?

flute-girl, I suggest looking here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/484442-good-colleges-not-conservatories-flute.html

Flute is highly competitive in audition based programs. Also, don't go into a performance based degree program unless you are 100% committed to your goal. Please spend some time in CC's music major forum.

Many there are experienced, and glad to help.

Well, it's not a liberal arts college per se, but you should definitely check out University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music. Not only is it one of the best performance programs in the US,but it is part of a major university where you can take a very wide plethera of courses.
