I know I can get get a higher math score than 730 because I’ve done so multiple times. However, retaking it in January would be risky because it would be the last opportunity to take the current SAT and the anxiety could possibly make me do even worse. My biggest problem with SAT math is making careless mistakes. Math is usually my best section but this time it was my worst. My overall score was a 2240 with 750 CR/760 W (78 multiple choice/9 essay)/730 M. I really want to go to MIT, but I feel like this possibility is hampered by my inclination towards careless mistakes. Should I retake or would proving my true mathematical abilities in the subject test suffice?
Have you taken the Math I or II subject test?
I’m planning on taking the Math II test next year. I am a junior. I know you can miss a few questions on that test and still get an 800, so I think I’ll do better. I understood every question on the math SAT, I just made some careless mistakes.
I would probably recommend taking the SAT again if you really really want to get into MIT. Don’t let the anxiety get to you, the ACT is always a good second option if you don’t do amazingly (which you will).
Thank you, Relictus. I’ll make sure to be relaxed on the day of the test.
Also, would it really hurt me as much as I think, because MIT’s 25th percentile score is a 750? I know that they look at a 750 the same way as an 800, so my reading and writing scores are good. However, math seems to be more important than reading and writing at MIT.
Thank you for your advice, Relictus. I retook the SAT this January and got a 2350 with an 800 in math.
Wow well let us know if you get in. congratulations on your improvement. Good luck.
@calcul8r This is probably true, considering that MIT has its own essay evaluation and probably wouldn’t care less about reading and writing SAT scores once they are decent enough. Remember you will need to take a math and a science subject test. But congrats on the 2350 and best of luck!
