I want to go to a northeast engineering schools but am not sure which schools I should apply to that will accept me. So far I have applied to Boston University for eaely admission as a reach school, tulane because they gave me free admission, virginia tech and manhattan college. I have a 2.5 cumulative unweighted gpa and class rank 800 out of around 1200 I think. I got a 1270 on the new SAT. What other schools should I look into that are good for engineering?
Why engineering? Your stats are low for the typical engineering candidate. Is there some particular love of math (and aptitude for it) or exposure to engineering that has you interested?
A 2.5 UW GPA will result in a denial at BU. It is far lower than a 1270 SAT would indicate.
SAT averages below are for the entire university, not just engineering
Clarkson (NY) - SAT avg 1240
Gannon (Erie, PA) SAT avg 1110
Wilkes (Wilkes Barre, PA) , Sat avg 1220
Widener (Chester, PA), SAT avg 1030
Rowan (Glassboro, NJ), SAT avg 1230
Temple (Phila, PA), SAT avg 1210
U of Vermont, SAT avg 1200
Syracuse depending on weighted GPA. Syracuse is more holistic than most engineering schools. SAT avg 1240
If you would be willing to look south, Ole Miss, SAT avg 1160.
Ohio U, SAT avg 1160.
The OP’s SAT is decent but that 2.5 GPA will result in denials at most colleges.
?
Your first post states that you have a 2.5 GPA.
So what schools do you think I should apply to?
Your local state school that offers engineering.
A 1270 SAT score with a 2.5GPA tells adcoms that you are a bright student who blew off high school. No selective school will want to take a chance on you.
You should rethink your choice of major. Engineering is HARD - you have to be very dedicated to do well in it.
^ as I asked earlier, why engineering?
What state are you in? What is your weighted gpa?
Here are a few:
City College of New York
Morgan State
smaller Penn State campuses
U Maine
U Southern Maine
U New Haven
Lincoln U
How much can your family afford to pay? What state are you from?
Start at a CC and knock out the prerequisites and do well.
Then apply as a transfer…
Admission is going to be a tough road to hoe, given your relatively low GPA. And if you didn’t do well in your high school math courses it could be the kiss of death to your application. What field of engineering interests you?
Cross CCNY-Grove Engineering off your list, because it’s small and harder to get into that most folks realize. Community College could be your best shot to convince Engineering schools that you’ve got what it takes. There are STEM schools that may admit you right out of high school, but you’re going to have to make a great argument for yourself (or through faculty recommendations). That said, investigate these options;
Clarkson University
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Rochester Institute of Technology
U of Rochester
SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry (Bioprocess Engineering/Chemical Engineering)
SUNY New Paltz (Electrical Engr., Mechanical Engr.)
In Florida. Weighted gpa is 3.3
@Niernpowers , do you perhaps have ADHD ? That would explain your low g.p.a. /higher SAT score. A larger state school will possibly accept you, but you do need to explain the low g.p.a. on College Application.
