Want to major in computer science but have done AP Bio

Hello,

My Daughter is in Jr year and we are deciding major and collage list. If you have dome AP Bio and AP calculus , what are the chances of admissions to computer science? If AP computer science is not done. and Havent done any internships or project related to programming

SAT is 1900 and GPA is 3.5

is it a good idea to apply for computer science.

What could be the probable collage lis

We are in california and could apply out of state schools.

But I am very wrried about admission chances.

Let me know if you can information or advises .

Thanks,
Tr

There are lots of good schools with strong computer science programs that will accept students with your daughter’s profile…some good ones in the midwest include…

Iowa State…will likely qualify for a nice scholarship as they are actively recruiting females for certain STEM fields like CS.
U Iowa
Michigan State
U Nebraska

A reach school might be U Minnesota.

Thank you so much. She has lot of other activities She would prefer the collages you have listed. Is bio engineering good option ? Is it very difficult courses one has to do for bio engineering ?

I don’t believe not having done a computer science class will prevent your daughter from applying for the major.

Many state colleges accept your major request based on demand and academic performance more than based on a single class during high school. Most of the private colleges don’t require you to apply to a specific major.

Thank for your response. Some collages have computer science as a impacted major where you have to apply for that major. But I didnt know some private collages dosent require you to apply for major. If you any suggestions for collages let me know. That will be very helpful.

Thanks,
Tr

Where you can apply depends on a whole lot of factors.

type of college (big, small, state, private, unisex)

budget (colleges these days can cost upto 65,000 per year)

additional factors (climate, where located - rural or city, …)

If she likes it, let her go for it.

For bio engineering though, I have seen that it really depends on the college. Some will give you a good gate into job openings while others…not so much. The not so much ones are colleges that are better to apply mechanical engineering and concentrate in biology, as this gives more broadness of abilities

Thanks. considering the criteria

type of collage -small , state, private

budget - no issue

Additional factors - non rural anything other than that is ok…but if scool is good rural is ok.

If you say budget is not an issue, there are a lot of schools where she can get in or go to.

Can you define small?

Off the top of my head, I can suggest University of Houston, University of Texas at Dallas, Baylor University, so on.

I would recommend Santa Clara University in California.

There is an excellent college search tool in college confidential on the front page called college search. I plugged in 1900 and 3.5 and the results were endless.

If you want to look up some universities that interest your daughter, we can discuss them in more detail.

Thanks, Smaller in the sense not like UC LA and UC Berkley where 600 kids in one freshman class for some courses. Smaller in the sense ratio for student/teacher ratio is small. not sure what it could be.

I tried tool collage search but when I give major the list changes to smaller unknown collages. But I will try again. and send you the list of collages.

I am more interested in coming with safety but good schools.

Thanks,
tr

The tool dosent give much when I add major…I saw that when I added other majors too.

The tool filters by GPA and SAT scores and also starts at 100% chance of being admitted. The well known schools start appearing lower in the list where the chances start dropping.

You can also plug in your own schools and check out the probability.

When using the CC search tool, you have to expand the number of results returned, the control is near the top. It sorts based on your odds of getting in, so the “safety” schools show up first in the list.
No matter which college search tool you use, you will get lots of results for computer science. It is taught at engineering schools, state schools both large and small, liberal arts schools, universities of all sizes etc. It helps if you have more criteria to use…
I also like this tool but it doesn’t allow you to put in your GPA and test scores.

There are also tons of threads in here and in the engineering forum on schools for CS.
Is the 3.5 weighted or unweighted? What is the CR+M SAT score?

Have her look up computational biology or bioinformatics if she is interested in both bio and CS.
It is not necessary to have CS in high school to get accepted into a CS program in college.
Is she going to take the SATs again?
