Want to row (do crew) in BS? Go for it!

I do crew now, and I’m looking to continue it at boarding school (I’m applying fall 2011). What schools have really strong crew teams?

@loubear,
I don’t go to BS, but I do know that Kent has a really strong Crew program. I think they’re supposed to have the strongest one out of any boarding school.

@ifax: that’s really encouraging because i was looking at kent already for riding. glad it has two of my top sports :)

are you applying to boarding school this year?

@loubear,
Yeah I’m applying to BS this year. I’m applying to: Deerfield, Middlesex, Concord, Taft, Kent, Exeter, Andover, and maybe Milton. Where are you applying to bedsides Kent?

@frosty6, oops! Sorry:P What school do you go to?

I’m interested in crew and I’m going to Lawrenceville. Does anyone know what the tryouts are like? I heard they just wanna see if you’re fit enough. Is it also true that crew takes a lot of working out along with rowing?

I tried out for crew at Lville, but then discovered I did not like the sport. Tryouts have 3 parts for boys: Mile run, max pullups, erg (indoor rowing machine) time. I do not remember the erg distance. The kids on the team are fairly nice - one of the coxswains will be a lower prefect next year (Boys). Also one of the boys lower house masters is the head coach (boys) and the wife of one of the girls lower house masters is an assistant coach (boys and girls crew I think…) The best way to prep is go to the gym and practice erging a lot so you can get in shape and figure out proper form. I do not know if you are a guy or girl, but in any case, I know more about guys crew than girls. I can find out more if needed - I have friends who row

dapple - great crew team. love the people! Also - one of the rising seniors on the team just won gold in the 8+ at Junior Worlds… he’s such a beast! The erg distance is 2000m, and it’s not too bad :slight_smile:

loubear - exeter has fantastic crew. but take a look at this years New Englands: [NEIRA Results](http://www.qra.org/regattas/neira.html)

look at teh GV8 GF and the GV4 GF - those will give you the best idea of team speeds. Just so you know: varsity fours for girls: windsor, groton, st.marks, deerfield, Miss Porter’s, BBN. GV8 GF: andover, kent, exeter, st. pauls, then the next two are day private schools. These are the grand finals at an invitation regatta, so even if their fourth, fifth, or sixth at this regatta it’s still fantastic. The way the heats are set up makes it really hard to make the Grands. Also, Nobels won the g4+ last year but was in petites this year… super close race let me tell ya - one of the best races i’ve ever been in!

*super close race in the heats

LLVILLE: Even though I won’t be attending Lville, I assume that most tryouts are the same. To try out as a girls coxswain, do we have to do the mile run, erg, and pullups? Or are coxswain tryouts different. I hope it’s different (so I at least get a chance to attempt a shot!)

hahaah yes wherever you are coxswain tryouts are different. Youre probably going to have to run, though

again, i do not know too much for girls, but for guys cox i know that one of the tests they had to do was a flexibility test for some reason… other than that i do not know, sorry

@frosty6 How much do you have to run? Like, a mile? 2 miles? :P

oh boy. i suck at running. i’ve been working on it though :slight_smile: hopefully i can pass tryouts. crew seems fun, and i live somewhere where crew is unheard of, so i’d like to try it! oh well, i’ll still show up at tryouts anyways :)

at lawrenceville they have fall crew and spring crew, but it is mostly a spring sport so you have time to shape up!

Does anyone know if you have to try out for Exeter’s novice fall crew?

for running - it totally depends on the program… some years I run 3 others I run one. You just kind of go with the flow. And don’t worry if you’re bad at running! I’m literally the worstttt but if you can erg then nbd. You’ll find that not everyone one your first boat is naturally inclined toward things other than rowing ahah

All my brothers did crew - really awesome sport. I’m probably going to cox, (if I go to BS) but my brothers grow really tall and gain weight by sophomore year, so I might have to be a rower then! That’s what happened to one of my brothers. Really great sport, good for colleges too. In my town, you can get great rec’s from coaches because the coaches in my town used to coach at those colleges and such.

I would love to do crew at BS - problem is, I’ve never done it. Should I still try out?

It wouldn’t hurt IMO. Unless you have another sport that you want to do. Some BS’s offer some training in the fall for spring crew. I’m going to try doing football in the fall though - it still gets me a workout for crew either way.
