I’m doing crew, and have never done it before. Since I’m required to do a sport, I know I will make the team. The problem is whether I’ll make the novice team (all the newbies), or the JV team. Don’t be nervous–I also stink at running, but I know I won’t be the only one!

At my hometown, everyone starts out at novice and then they move you up after that year. Do you have to try out for novice?

No, you don’t, but maybe they’ll need someone for the JV team, and whoever is good on novice can help out…but I don’t know.

Want to do crew? Go for it - as long as you are either taller than 5’7" or weigh less than 115 lbs. =(

i bet you could do novice even if you don’t fit that “criteria”! It’s novice–they probably wouldn’t push anyone away!

I didn’t know how short coxswain’s were because my brother was a tall one lol.

I am going to be a senior at a top tier boarding school and I row. I had never heard of crew, much less done it, before I went to school. However, I tried out when I got there and soon made the team. Now I am being recruited to row in college. Seriously, you should try it! PM me with any questions.

I have never rowed before - ever. I’m athlete but I know that at most boarding schools, you are required to do an extracurricular every term, and crew sounds like the most interesting. Were a lot of crew members solely athletes for a particular sport originally? Is it easier for them then nonathletes at first (muscle, etc)?

No. Absolutely not. I am very unathletic, yet I’m doing crew since I’m required to take a sport. Crew targets different muscle groups than what are usually targeted in other sports.
