Want to Transfer from SJSU to UCB, help me choose classes!!!!!

I'm entering freshman year at SJSU and I'm majoring in Computer Science. I want to transfer to the EECS program at Berkeley. So far, here is my schedule

English 1a (3 units)
Math 32 Seminar (3 units)
Math 32 Workshop (1 unit)
Sci 2 (do I need this???) (3 units)
CS 46A (can I take something higher??) (4 units)

After all these, I have 14 units. I have room left for 1 more class. Problem is I don't know which class I should take. What other class can I take as a Computer Science major? I looked on assist and the packet I got from SJSU and everything but its all so confusing, I thought I'd come here for help.

Do you REALLY want to go to Cal? If so, you need to go to community college instead. As someone who has spent a lot of time learning about non-traditional transfers to UC, I can guarantee you that transferring from a Cal State to a UC is as improbable as the rumors would have you believe.

One more question. I’m deciding between Math 32 (multivariable calculus) and Math 161A (Applied Statistics) which are both on the same level and are prereqs to the same courses, but I read that Berkeley requires/prefers multivariable calculus for transfers, so which one should I take?

if you havent even started 1 semester at sjsu why would you go there in order to transfer? have you heard of CCs? they exist for people like you; and you’re trying to take the hard route. props to you my friend. you would take calculus in your case. good luck!

Go to a CCC and earn a 3.8+ if you really want to go to UCB.

@ xxbluejay21, You really need to become more realistic about what is possible and how you can make the best of your situation. While I am not going to say it is impossible to transfer to UCB from SJSU I will say you probably would have a better chance of winning the lottery. Transfer applicants from CSUs have by far the lowest priority of any group of applicants for admission by transfer to any UC. If you look at the statistics you will see that about 33% of community college applicants are admitted by a UC, about 20% of transfer applicants from other UCs are accepted, 10% of applicants applying from OOS four year colleges are accepted and only 5% of CSU transfer applicants are accepted by any UCs. My guess is that the vast majority of the very small number of CSU transfer applicants that were accepted by a UC went to either UC Merced or UC Riverside with hardly any being accepted by UC Berkeley.

You could substantially increase your chances of transferring to Berkeley by not enrolling at SJSU and instead going to a California community college (CCC) and applying as a junior for UC Berkeley and that is probably the route you should take if nothing less than Berkeley is acceptable to you. However, you should be aware that the CCCs are suffering terribly from the budget cuts, have cut way back on the courses they offer and getting the Calculus and other science classes you will need for your major at a CCC is nearly impossible. At this point most of the CCCs will have already finished priority registration for the fall term and the chances of being able to enroll in a Calculus, English or Computer Science class at a CCC before next year is practically zero. While it used to be that you could transfer to a UC after two years at a CCC, three years is more the norm now and with a major like CS which has many prerequisite courses that are extremely difficult to get into in CCCs now, four years would be more realistic before you could transfer as a junior. And if you do not get accepted by a four year school from your CCC the only thing you can get is a basically useless AA degree.

I think you should look at and focus the opportunities you have now and take advantage of them. SJSU, particularly its CS and engineering departments are among the most sought after in the CSU system. You will be in the heart of silicon valley, surrounded by many high technology companies that hold SJSU and its Computer Science and Engineering faculty and students in very high regard and often prefer to recruit students for internships and full time employment from SJSU rather than from most of the UCs. Since you can get a BS and even an MS at SJSU you do not face the uncertainty that CCC students face of whether they will ever get into a school that can award you at least a Bachelors degree. While enrollment at CCCs keeps rising, it appears that the UCs and CSUs will at best be holding enrollment at current levels and could well reduce it leaving even more CCC students in an academic deadend.

When you graduate with a degree in CS from SJSU you will probably have excellent employment opportunities right away but if you still have your heart set on Berkeley, and you get good grades at SJSU, you can always apply to Berkeley for graduate school and have a vastly greater chance of acceptance as a graduate student than you would ever have as a transfer student.

Here’s the general guideline for Berkeley EECS transfer that is not CCC specific: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/transfer/files/elecengr_ucb.pdf</a>. Good luck!
