I am currently a Sophomore (Just recently finished my first year) at DePaul University, due to the high prices and DePaul not being the best of colleges in terms of ranking, I’ve decided to transfer to UIUC. My major is Computer Science and my GPA right now is 3.95. So far I’ve done the introduction classes as well as the data structures class. I would like to know what my chances are to get into UIUC (I will be applying as a sophomore)? And are the physics and chemistry courses necessary for admission to UIUC?
So you want to head to UIUC? Good choice! A little more data, please.
Why are you studying CS and what do you hope to do when you finish your undergrad? Have you done any research or work outside school? Your GPA is good, but it looks like you missed an A or two. In which classes?
The classes which I got a A- in were both English classes and I’ve come to Chicago about a year ago. I’m studying CS because I simply enjoy programming as well as due to the fact that it is an ever demanding profession. I have not done much work outside of school.
Your GPA is competitive and above the average for admitted transfers to CS (3.8). It looks like you need to take general chemistry and introductory physics (mechanics and electricity and magnetism), along with a “modern physics” course. Call the CS department and ask what chemistry and physics courses you need.
You’ve done your data structures course, but make sure you have discrete math also. After you’ve gotten things cleared up on courses (by calling the department), write a thoughtful statement of purpose that expresses your interest in research. Too many people say they choose CS for the employment prospects: this is very cliche and I suggest avoiding too much discussion about just wanting to program. Talk about your interest in research, any past research, and indicate that you are interested in pursuing graduate study.
Please post with further questions/updates.
