Wanted Bioengineering, got in with General Bio. How easy is it to switch?

If after a semester or two I try to transfer into bioengineering out of general biology (I really want to) how different is the courseload? I figure it can't be too different, but I want to know if there is anything peculiar/if any of you know a hitch.

This is for UCSD.

UCSD??? VERY FREAKING DIFFICULT

It’s the most impacted engineering program. To even get in as an engineering transfer student you need a probably a 3.7 or higher.

You would have to pull top grades to have a chance. Take Calc 1, 2, and 3 thats for sure. Engineering is completely different from a Bio major. Calc Based physics and a programming class would be required.

[Bioengineering Department | UC San Diego](http://www.be.ucsd.edu/undergraduate_major_bioengineering_curriculum)

I wouldn’t enroll at UCSD w/ the intent to change majors to bioengineering. You might want to call the Bio dept and or the Bioengineering dept to ask if it is even possible.

Do some research, look on the bioengineering site for admissions. I believe it is only freshman or CC transfer admissions only.

UCSD Bio-Engineering is a good school just like Johns Hopkins (JHU) in BME (Bio-Medical Engineering). And like I have been saying in previous topics in this Engineering Forum, BME is very tough and needs to maintain high GPA, yes not 3.0 or 3.1 or even 3.2 but 3.4 (and that is the lowest end). So, if you think that you have the guts and will see the glory then go ahead. Nobody is stopping you.

More importantly, you have to go all the way to Phd since all the jobs/careers are doing Research. If you stop at undergraduate or master degree then you still will get a job but fixing BME equipment or assisting the Big Kahuna with Phd. But, you will not be calling the shot or quarterbacking the project or be dept. head, etc.

Regarding this: you want to know if there is anything peculiar/if any of you know a hitch.

Answer: you have to take lots of engineering classes as part of the programs. Remember the word Engineering in Bio-Eng or BME and it means engineering in pure sense. Do you like Physics, engineering? and you have to get high GPA too…if the answer is still yes then do it. Be blessed.
