Interesting article from Yale alumni magazine about recent efforts by elite schools to combat inequality by recruiting more poor students:

https://www.yalealumnimagazine.com/articles/3801

Vassar and Amherst have been the most successful so far, with 24% and 22% of their students on Pell Grants (the most common measure used for this). Yale, at 14% is the lowest in the Ivy League other than Princeton (12%).

Another interesting datapoint is that the vast majority of poor students at elite privates come from just 15 urban areas, mostly on the coasts or Texas. Wider outreach would be more expensive of course.
