So I realized that I cannot enroll for another year after I have exceeded 130 units. I am an transfer econ major who wants to take some business classes. However, after planning carefully, I have to take only 13 units for each semester to not exceed 130 by the end of spring 2010. I am just wondering whether there are ways out there for me to take an extra semester just to take some extra classes that I am interested in.

I am thinking of declaring a double major just to increase my unit ceiling. And then, during my last semester, I would drop my double major and just graduate as a single major. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Can I petition to take another year?

one more questions. for double major? do I need to graduate once i exceed 136? or can i take another semester regardless of the unit ceiling?

On the Berkeley livejournal forum I remember somebody mentioning that appealing the unit cap was a fairly simple process. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly where I saw that information. Your major adviser might be able to direct you to the right person.

The L&S deans let me know that exceptions are granted, but I would need a DAMN good reason because my staying an extra semester essentially meant one less space for a freshman/transfer admit.

I don't know the unit cap for double majors, but you can sort of game the unit cap in general by making sure you're only 1-2 units short of the cap so that you can enroll in the next semester (which would then be your last) -- ie, make fall bring your unit total to 129, so you can enroll in spring and take however many units you'd like.

re: undecided

yea i was trying to do that, but after including the transfer units that i have (70) plus my summer session units right now (7), I need at most 13 units per semester without taking any summer. This case is almost impossible.

re: karabear1
can you send me a pm if u happen to see it again? =D thanx

If you can declare successfully as a double major you would be guaranteed 5 semesters, as you probably already know. But, if you want to do so on the pretense of not completing one major, I am sure you can make it look like you accidentally didn't complete the double major due to poor time management.

I would assume that this process is abused for that reason, though, which could make declaring your second major difficult.

If you have AP credit, you can get L&S to ignore them for your unit total. I believe they're the only units they allow you to forfeit.

yea i will have to have them not consider the ap units but even that won't change the fact that i need at most 13 units per semester without summer to get 129 units by the end of spring 10.

re: ek, yea, but im not sure if theyre gonna approved it. i think i will even exceed 136 units after spring 2010. so declaring double probably wont be much of help in my case =(. btw for those who are in the same boat with me i think this is gonna help.

thanx to karabear, i went to berkeley livejournal and search for the thread there. =D

ucberkeley: over-the-credit-limit question

It doesn't matter if you exceed 136 units so long as you graduate within your semester limit (4 for single major, 5 for double major).

wow really? then doubling major will certainly help me but i dont think i will be approved.
