Wanting to take AP English in Sophmore High School Year

I want to take a Honors English class in Freshman year in my high school, but my counselor denounced my option to join Honors English because she said that I got a 3 on my English SBAC in 7th grade. As a result, I have to take a regular English class. Here’s the problem. If I take an regular English class in my freshman year, I feel that I won’t be able to take AP English in Sophmore year. I really want to challenge myself, but my high school says no. What do I do?

It may be different at your school, but for most schools, AP English is a junior year course. But assuming that sophomores are able to take it at your school, the solution is simple - ace your freshman English course. There is nothing else that you can do other than that between now and the time course selection opens up.

Try to take it before senior year, but if you can’t, just self study it. I didn’t learn much from my actual class, I just practiced essays and read a lot. It’s definitely possible to get a 4 or 5 just by learning the vocabulary and types of essays asked.

Thank you skieurope. I feel that is sound advice I can use.

@skieurope I just found out that they don’t have AP English in junior year. Is there anything different I can do now?

I think the answer is still the same - get as high a grade as possible freshman year.

I guess I don’t understand the point of taking AP English sophomore year? Assuming your school has both AP Lit and AP Lang, if you make this choice, then which class will you pursue your senior year- Honors English 12? Why don’t you just ace your grades Freshman year, move onto honors English in sophomore, and take the two AP’s Junior and Senior year? From my perspective, there is no point in unnecessarily challenging yourself with AP’s too early, if you’ll just be left taking an honors class in senior year.
