I just recently started school as a freshman at the University of San Francisco and can already tell that I am not going to like it here. It's incredibly expensive and I am now realizing that this school is nowhere worth the $50,000 dollar a year tuition. I am looking to transfer to San Diego State University or UC Irvine. I never applied to UCI, but I applied to SDSU out of highschool and didn't get in. I should add that I am a california resident and live in Irvine and am about 5 mins. from UCI and an hour from sdsu. I had the grades but it is such an impacted school. Anyway I am wondering how should I go about transferring? Should I wait a semester and just get real good grades, or should I wait a year? The thing is I made a really stupid decision to come to this school and I don't want to be $50,000 down so I would like to transfer out asap. Also my GPA in highschool was a 3.4 with some AP's and my ACT is 25. Please let me know what I should do. Thanks.

Drop out now and go to cc.

^^^ I second that, iTransfer.

Exactly why I didn’t SIR in the first place. =D Glad I didn’t and chose a CC.

go to a ccc asap dude

You might be screwed for this semester(Since most CCC started already?) but definitely drop out and go to a CCC.

You best shot at getting into UCI’s/CSU

Definitely pick a major you enjoy and work on getting all pre-reqs done and also see what IGETC classes your CC require

or go to cc with a quarter system. for example, de anza starts on the 20th of sept. so u could drop out, go to de anza or any other cc on the quarter system, register and sign up for classes (which will be slim pickins but im sure anything is better than usf), and start with everyone else! woooo

alright so i guess the general consensus is to drop out and go to cc. Thing is my parents probably won’t let me do this at least until the year is done. I know it sounds like a waste of money to spend a year here and then go to a cc, but my parents are telling me that i need to stay at the school since i already started. Can i take the credits from a year at USF and then go to a cc and only have to spend like 1 year in a cc before I can transfer? Or could I transfer into a cc after the first quarter?

its just hard to see what classes actually transfer over from a private to a public…you would be better off financially and otherwise if you just went to a cc straight away

i was thinking about registering for the 8 week courses that the cc’s have. These courses start in October. Is this a good thing to do since the year has already started?

If you’re parents have the final say in the decision you’ll just need to make do until the year is done. Check with a counselor to see that you’re on the right path to completing your General Ed requirements at USF (yes, let them know your intentions… they are a lot more understanding than you might expect). As long as you are working toward your GE fulfillment and/or IGETC requirements you should be fine with transferring after a year at cc (following your year at USF).

On the bright side, you’ll be in a pretty decent area. I used to live almost at the corner of Fulton and Cole Streets (right across from St. Ignatius Cathedral). There are a lot of cool places to hang out (my favorite was Sacred Grounds Cafe at Cole and Hayes on the South Side). Plenty of hiking areas nearby and Clement St. has some of the best Chinese food and coffee in the area… but you’ll be right in the middle of the fog belt and sometime the wind can be pretty intense. I actually got lifted off my feet at Fulton and Stanyan once… but I was carrying an umbrella, which promptly inverted (and I’m over 200 lbs)!

If your parents won’t let you out of your commitment to USF just make do until you can transfer to a cc.

I was under the impression you had to complete two years to transfer to a UC.

Are your parents paying, and if so, do THEY think it’s worth it? As a parent, I can’t help wonder if you shouldn’t give it more time.

Oops! From the transfer FAQ
"8.Can I transfer in 1 year instead of 2?
Yes, as long as you can complete 60 units and finish the major prereq’s. This is most probable if you have lots of ap units to cover your 60 units and the number of classes required by your major is not many. For example, it would be much harder for an engineer major to transfer in 1 year due to the amount of classes an engineer major needs to take. "

Take general classes @ USF…look at IGETC for your local CC and then look at course discriptions at USF and your CC and try to take courses that look similar…like Intro to Stats, English 1 and 2, Intro to Art History, Intro to Sociology, One physical science and one life science, etc…

Stay at USF. What is your intended field of study? Trashing a school on CC is pretty low, by the way. You’re very fortunate to be there. It’s a world class place.

cecilturtle: While I agree that the OP appears to be making this decision rather early on, the culture-shock of moving to San Francisco from SoCal can be quite jarring. The weather alone is totally foreign to most outsiders… daily fog, constant dampness, and gray skies throughout much of the school year. It can really get to you.

I wouldn’t say that benny is trashing USF. I personally think that it’s a great school, especially if you are in the nursing program. My best friend got her nursing B.S. back in the day and is now a Charge nurse at Stanford Medical Center. I think that benny is frustrated at the moment and doesn’t see the point in paying the fees charged by the school (which are quite high by any standard - Example: USF undergraduate tuition for 2009/2010 is $34,430… Princeton’s is $36,640… Harvard’s is $33,696).

Cecilturtle you need to chill bro. I want to leave because of the financial situation. My parents can barely pay for their mortgage. This school is $50,000 a year. Sorry some people can’t afford that. I think it would be a lot better for the well-being of my family to go to a cc which is like $2,000 a year and then just transfer to a better school. From my local cc back home their is a 95% transfer rate to uc berkeley, so it seems like the better decision. It’s almost crazy to stay here longer and put my parents through such financial strain. I have been talking to my counselor and it sounds like i am going to leave the school and enter into the 8 week courses at my local cc back home which start in mid October. And CalBear you got it exactly right. I don’t see the point of paying all of this money, which my family doesn’t have, to get a degree that doesn’t match up to schools like ucla or uc berkely which are schools that i have a good chance of getting into after cc. Thanks for the replies everyone.

“From my local cc back home their is a 95% transfer rate to uc berkeley, so it seems like the better decision”

Wow! That’s impressive! I think there is like a less than 40 percent transfer rate to UC’s at most CCC’s. Do you mind saying which one that is?.

Pls accept my apologies for jumping on you bigbenny. I was out of line. Thank goodness for the others on CC.

Thank you for sharing your kind comments CalBear.
