Warning: Johns Hopkins

Dont apply there......Ive talked to two people in the last week who are miserable

just a heads up

its poison

Because, as we all know, two people's anecdotal impressions are precisely what applicants should be basing their decisions off of.

Run run run.....
Stay away from college...its too hard

Johns Hopkins has a reputation for being very cut throat and intense... works for some, doesn't for others.

The OP has a point...there are colleges just as good that are not nearly as stressful.

'nuff said...

yeah, that post wasnt well put

but I have heard from allot of places (books/sites/ect) that Hopkins is pretty stressed...like hyper grade conscious and what not

i think i just made this post cause i was really good friends with this kid who i was talking to today (he just got back from JH) and he seemed really miserable. it just kind of made an impresion on me. sorry for the seemingly anecdotal post.....

I've heard that PRE-MED at Hopkins is insane. I have friends going there for humanities who love it.

A college will not force you to be nervous about grades. Somebody just might not feel comfortable around other people that are nervous about grades; the kids who are nervous about grades at Hopkins are the same ones who were nervous about grades in high school. And considering that Hopkins is a wonderful and highly selective school, you're going to run into a bunch of people who care a lot about their grades, as you will at almost any top school. Most of these kids didn't earn high grades without some amount of stress on themselves to perform highly.

The beautiful thing about college, though, is that you get to choose your own friends, and if you don't like being around people who are stressed out about grades and whatnot, you make different friends. Maybe you want to be a pre-med at Hopkins, but you resolve to hang out with kids who aren't in the pre-med track, if you think your peers in your classes are too competitive.

schools with large premed population, engineers or in general one-dimensional studying machines are going to be stressful, because other areas of their lives are missing. Chicago, CMU, Caltech, JHU all come to mind. There are schools with smarter students, but not as many one dimensional students as these schools, so they are competitive, but not stressful.

Caltech kids are almost guaranteed to be more stressed out than MIT people in general.

One of my good friends from high school went to Hopkins for his undergrad. He said he enjoyed the school, but the large pre-med population was really annoying since they didn't care about learning the material, they just cared about getting an A (he was a ChemE, so he shared quite a few classes with them).

I think most of the people here at Caltech and back at CMU I knew that were ultra-stressed were the ones which felt grades were the most important aspect of their life. Generally the best students I know are the least stressed and able to keep everything in check. The only times I really get stressed are when I blow off doing work for a few days and fall behind and have to pull some really late nights to try and catch up.

Um, Johns Hopkins is in BALTIMORE. Have you been to Baltimore? No wonder they're miserable.

QFT

Yeah, it's about what friends you choose, but there's also the option of going to a school where you like almost everybody, not just some of the kids. That's usually how a "fit" is determined.

What about pre-meds in the humanities? ;)

Yale and Duke are in bad areas and don't have a miserable reputation. I don't see a connection. Besides, Baltimore isn't that bad.

A study done at CMU showed that the most stressed majors were Drama/CFA due to the uncertainty of their assessment for success and most majors at CMU have plenty of time to relax.

Needless to say, I think all premed majors are stressed, and JHU is no different as one of the best schools for such a career.

no, no pre med at jhu takes stress and competition to a whole new level that is literally life-threatening.

This is the most bogus thread I've read on here in months.

The "stay away from JHU" part is bogus. But the stress and misery part has some truth to it.

Thanks heavens you've saved so many from misery.

Do you suppose the university will close next year due to no applications, or will they let the miserable fools already enrolled finish out their degrees before shuttering their unworthy doors?

C'mon now, he was just pointing out that Johns Hopkins has that kind of environment. I don't think he's trying to bad mouth JHU, he just wanted to give a "heads up" to potential applicants.
