warren engineers area study ge's

can someone explain to me which classes qualify for the area studies?

For B.S. Engineering majors, each student must complete two Area Studies, one in the humanities/fine arts and one in the social sciences. Each of these Area Studies consists of three courses. A minimum of one course must be upper division. In lieu of an Area Study, a student may choose to declare a minor in a department or an interdisciplinary program.

on assist.org it doesnt list the courses that will transfer over from my community college

its because you need to choose specific dept you want to do your area study in

this might help:
http://warren.ucsd.edu/current_students/academic_life/advising/publications/advising_handbook.pdf</a></p>

ok that helps
but which classes from my community college will transfer over for the area studies?

also it says 1 course must be upper division, does that mean 1 course from each area study? or 1 course out of the total 6 coures you take?

and lastly, does the poli sci 27 that you have to take for warren count as a course in the poli sci area study?

As of Fall 2009, 2 classes have to be upper division in each area study (it’s not in the handbook, but it’s on the Warren College page).

What I am doing is making political science be one of my area studies. I will take PoliSci 150A, which also meets another warren GE requirement.

With 5 polisci classes, (including polisci 27/28), and 2/3 upper division polisci classes, I wonder how close to a minor I would be …

Ogi

go to assist.org and choose your cc, ucsd, and the dept of the area study you wanna do.
it should give you a list of lower and upper div classes that transfer over.

its 2 upper div in EACH area study. (http://warren.ucsd.edu/prospective/academic_requirements/index.php</a>)

I dont think it counts

"Ethics & Society:
One course: Phil 27 or Poli Sci 27 (cross-listed course) must
be taken for letter grade at UC San Diego. This course may
not overlap with any other requirement and must be taken
after WCWP 10A and 10B. "

they don’t like overlapping. Warren doesn’t require that many GE’s in the first place. (I’m a polisci major but since poli27 is not one of my lower div requirements, it doesn’t count really towards my major)

Ogi: Check the polisci dept website about minors. I think its 7 courses but I’m not totally sure.

i just checked the warren website
theres 2 changes for people entering fall 2009

1) you have to take 2 poli sci classes (poli sci 27 and 28) instead of just poli sci 27
2) 2 courses in each area studies have to be upper division

also, in the handbook, it says the music theory ap can count for 2 courses in the music or humanities area studies, but only 1 will really count, because i still need to take 2 upper division classes?

Yep I just saw that too.
Yes. Most ap credit = lower div.

Highly recommend you guys pick an area study where you can get an overlapping course with one of the “cultural diversity” courses. They look to all suck IMO, so pick one that you can overlap with one of the area studies. As I said, I decided on the Political Science Area Study, and will be taking PoliSci 150A which also meets that requirement.

For 7 courses to get a minor… I think I’ll pass (going to have about 5 courses most likely), not worth the extra 2 courses to get a minor.

Ogi

[Political Science Minor](http://polisci.ucsd.edu/undergrad/minor.htm)

it states on ^ that poli 27 does not count towards polisci majors/minors

I did my cultural diversity at a CC. EASY A.

was planning on taking all upper division polisci classes for my area studies, …still looks like I would need 2 other UD courses … probably not worth it unless a bunch of courses get canceled and I need to take some courses to maintain my full time status or something :(
