I got into BU as a CAS undeclared major. My financial aid is awesome so I think I’m gona go here

So now I’d like to hear some opinions on the dorms from any current or new students. Warren or West ? I’ve heard good and bad about both. Input about any of the other dormitories is cool too thanks !

Warren since it’ll be much closer to your classes :]

I’d be interested to hear what people say about this too. I’ve heard people say that West has a better “community” feel to it. Though walking 20 minutes to class every day would kind of suck.

I just got accepted into School of management and I wonder if many freshman choose smaller dorm living like shelton hall or bay street brownstone?

I feel like I hear more good things about West than Warren. I just want to know if it’s really worth the walk everyday lol. Warren is so convenient though ! Such a hard decision.

I’m sure this question gets asked every year so here’s a paraphrase of previous answers:

Warren Towers - EXTREMELY convenient if you’re in CAS or ENG or SMG or SAR. The dorms are pretty small but you’ll make lots of new friends and your floor will become your new family. Has a great community feel. Has doubles and some singles and quads. if you wanted more access to downtown Boston, this would be your place - Newbury St is a short 30 min walk away.

West - convenient for CFA and CGS. Near the Gym, so lots of jocks live here, and overall a VERY different vibe. It’s a little more isolated and occupied by more upperclassmen than not…

Towers - convenient for SMG but CAS freshmen/sophomore students live here too. mostly doubles and triples, and still a GREAT community feel to it

Hojo - mostly SMG students, not much of a community feel but still convenient

i wouldn’t live in shelton my first year. everyone keeps their doors shut and is a generally very quiet dorm

I live in Warren but I’ll give you my as unbiased of an opinion as I can.

Warren
- close to CAS which most of your classes will be regardless of major (right across the street)
- there is a community feel; you always see the same people in the dining hall and elevator
- if you’re living in warren, most of your friends will be in warren (convenient)

- dining hall is right inside (no need to walk outside to eat … which sucks in bad weather)

West
- far walk from main part of campus (and where most classes will be, unless you are CGS)
- closer to frat houses though and harvard ave
- nice view of Nickerson field
- no late night cafe … extreme pita instead (which imo doesn’t taste as good)
- in some building you do have to go outside to get to the dining hall
- close to the fit rec

I think I’m going to choose Warren because it’s so close to the center of campus and my classes. Like I would have wanted West because it’s near FitRec but apparently Warren has a fitness room. I’ll still trek down to FitRec, but I’d rather walk there a few times a week than walk from West to my classes and GSU and everything daily.

@tinetime15 Warren does not have a fitness room anymore. If you read that from the Backdoor it’s because the Backdoor is a bit outdated as it was written in 2009. The fitness room was recently converted to another quiet study lounge in Warren.

The trek to the Fitrec isn’t bad. It’s exercise afterall and it would be a good warm up to whatever work out you plan to do in the Fitrec. Also, there are many people that workout on the stairs of Warren Towers. There are many flights of stairs and it is definitely a work out. I knew people who would do suicides (4th floor to 18th, 18th to 5th, 5th to 18th, 18th to 6th, and so on) on the stairs for a good work out.

Aw man I’m a little sad they closed the fitness room lol =[ but no matter, I’ll just walk to FitRec because the walk there is a good warm up as you said xhomefryy. Plus I’m sure walking up those stairs in Warren will be a work out in itself.
But suicides are a little too intense for me lol I dont work out that much. But thanks a lot =]

bias or no bias, everyone i know says that west is full of much nicer people. all of the friendly people i’ve met live at west. like i said, EXTREMELY bias. but, whatever. people at warren suck.

But then a new year means new people. Maybe that particular year or floor just happened to be unfriendly. There are so many factors so its kind of hard to say.

Also, I had a question, how would living in a single room affect my freshman year?

Hahah opening this thread and seeing the responses be the exact opposite of what I thought people would say. I think the fact that everyone is saying east says a lot about the type of people that frequent college confidential.

I wouldn’t be caught dead living in East campus. Warren is the most claustrophobic cluster**** of people living together, and the floors aren’t even that social. Every time I visit my friends floor everyone has their doors closed and keeps to themselves. Oh and Warren food sucks, like it’s really really bad. Also East has no community feel at all you just kind of go out the door and youre standing on the sidewalk in the middle of the city.

West Campus on the other hand is it’s own little community. Basically you have the three dorms surrounding nickerson field with a sort of courtyard area where everyone just chills and hangs out. Always people outside on the grass or by the benches, and always people doing pickup games on Nickerson field. Ask anyone on campus and they’ll tell you West has the BEST food by far. Also the gym is a 2 minute walk away which is really convenient especially during the Winter when it gets quite cold, I don’t think I’d ever go if I lived in East. Now my only complain about West is about how far classes are, but it’s really not as bad as you think. The BU bus leaves West campus every 10 minutes and it takes about 6 minutes to get to Central Campus (ie: Photonics, CAS, ect.) and 10 minutes to get to SCI, SMG, ect. which really isn’t bad at all. On top of that you have the regular bus AND the T so you’re really never gonna be waiting for any of them as most likely one of the three will show up in a minute or two. Oh and West Campus is a lot closer to Alston which is where all the parties are at.

EDIT: Oh also by unanimous vote, everyone agrees that West has WAY hotter girls. Just take one look into our dining hall. West is like a porn star movie, and Warrens like on the set of Ugly Betty.

I lived in Warren during my freshman year. While I agree that each have their perks, I still would recommend Warren over West for a freshman. Warren is ridiculously convenient for a CAS student. Chances are really good that all of your classes will be within five minutes of your building. On those crappy winter days, convenience is a lovely thing. In addition, each floor has a common room. From my experience, floors have more of a cohesive vibe in Warren because of the common rooms. You really get that community feel, especially at the beginning of the year. It was a really good place to live as a freshman.

West does have Nickerson and a better dining hall though. The convenience of the gym is nice too, but you probably will walk to the gym less than you have to go to class anyways. The walk from Warren to Fitrec isn’t too hardcore either. Just being at BU, walking 12 to 15 minutes will seem like no big deal after awhile. It just sucks more in between classes and all.

What about a COM student? Which option would be good? other than Warren! I was thinking 575 Commonwealth Ave… any views on that guys? thanks in advance!

If you are a com student, I say warren warren warren.
Hojo is okay, but trust me Warren. (or West)
Hojo is a great 2nd choice when you have to list the preferences of your housing.

i’ve only ever visited hojo once, but it’s still awesome. i feel like triples are just better. the only thing is, it lacks a dining hall, which sucks.

The accommodations in Warren are slightly nicer than in West, and being a CAS student, there’s a huge advantage to being able to walk two minutes across the street to get to class. Also, the dining in Warren is better, despite what West loyalists will say. You’re closer to Allston and the parties in West Campus, but it’s not like it’s that much farther on a Friday night in Warren, and in WT, you’re closer to downtown and Kenmore, where there’s better shopping and dining than Packard’s Corner. I lived in Warren my Freshman year and StuV my junior, so I got to experience both sides of campus, and I way preferred East/Central.

You will not think Triples are better after a year of living in one. The no privacy aspect really comes into play, especially when one person wants to go to bed at 11 pm and the other is staying up till 3 am watching a movie/doing Calculus homework.

And who the hell are you kidding xanderman, Warren dining hall sucks. I hate having to suck it up and go eat there for lunch, to the point where I eat at subway a lot even though I don’t really have the money. Towers is pretty much universally agreed to be the worst, bad food, no cell phone reception, antisocial, and just “dead” in general.
