Warren Wilson College?

Anyone have any experience with Warren Wilson College? Someone mentioned it to my horse/wannabe-vet daughter, and she was particularly interested in the working farm aspect of the school. Kinda like a co-ed Deep Springs for the not-so-ultra brillant.

Concerneddad:

I have not personally heard of this school, but I will ask my DD when she gets home later tonight. My DD#1 is currently a junior in college and she is pre-vet, especially the horsey kind! She is an animal science (science vs. industry) major with a particular concentration in equine science. She has 3 equine classes this semester. And they all fit into her major, which includes all her vet school prerequisites. Since the university she attends has a vet school she is able to have all her labs at the vet school in their equine units. Same is true for the poultry science, swine and livestock. All her labs require full particpation with the animals. She has 5 labs, one a day and is in horse heaven!! Her research project for next year is all horses.

She has done all the research on vet schools, their requirements both academic and animal hours required, and most importantly state residency. For example, at her particular vet school they require a specific animal nutrition course that is only taught at their university in the animal science department. It is taught at some other universities, namely those with vet schools who have animal science in their undergrad department. And if you look at some of the stats for the vet schools you will see that they admitted NOT ONE SINGLE out-of-state student. Univ Tenn@Knoxville comes to mind. It was one of the main reasons we moved from the west coast to here. Any of the neighboring states to CA that don't have vet schools are considered in-state for UC Davis which gives Davis 7 other states besides CA as in-state residents. The competition is fierce to say the least.

If I can help anymore or ask my DD what you might need to know, just holler...

(thought I'd try out my new southern drawl!)

concerneddad: There are probably other people who post here who could give you better and more information, but I'm in NC, and Warren Wilson has always had an excellent reputation--especially a standout with English/creative writing. It has always looked very appealing to me, and of course, I think you have to be the 'right' kind of person to really love it... but, yes, I think it is probably close to a "co-ed Deep Springs," though I think the students at WW are also bright and creative types. Again, I know it mainly for the creative writing program, which is excellent, I believe. It's a beautiful area, too. Take a trip there if you can.

This is a page for the vet school pre-reqs. Thought you might want to take a look since Warren Wilson college is in NC. Did not know that til Jack posted. Thanks jack! You would think I would have heard of the school since I have 3 high schoolers, but we are in the eastern part of the state, and most kids in this area are only focused on State, Carolina and Duke.

Nice to meet you neighbor!!!

concerneddad,

I used to live near Asheville, and went a couple of years ago to see the school. It is really interesting in ethos, very artsy in some ways. My favorite folk singer ever, David Wilcox went there and loved it. The daughter of a good friend went two years and then transferred, not because she didn't like it, but beacuse she is a "free-thinker" type and wanted to go explore the world some other way. The Premium edition of USNews reflects that only 33% graduate after four years, 44% after five, and 43% after six. That may be a reason for some concern.

Well, that would indeed be reason for concern momofthree. While I believe in learning for the love of learning, I also think it is appropriate to have an end goal in sight -- especially if I am footing the bill.

We have friends that live In Asheville, and my wife as visited the area. It is indeed beautiful.

We have a vet. school in Oregon, and while OSU would seem the logical choice for her, she would really like 1) to go away for college; and 2) have the smaller class sizes that an LAC would afford.

I am very intrigued by Warren wilson college as well, I wonder if the low grad rate is due to isolation or low financial aid?
http://www.collegesofdistinction.com/collegetemplates/fastfacts.asp?cid=285
here is a little more info though

Check out this link: http://www.warren-wilson.edu/news/bostonglobe.shtml and read 4th paragraph up from the bottom, specifically about retention rates. It does have a good reputation, but again, isn't for everyone. I know people who have gone and loved it (again, only for creative writing), but it's supposed to be very good in studio arts also.

Katwkittens: Hey! (now that's Southern!), and thanks. Hope you're enjoying it here.

Also...in my big book on colleges, it says "Warren Wilson is a college for thinkers with a deep sense of social commitment...." I expect it's that social commitment and "working the farm" that gets to folks..sad to say. I also notice that it also says environmental science is one of their most popular majors.

Thanks Emeraldkity4. I need to dig into this low graduation rate some.
