Was CMU invited to join the ivy league?

<p>Why would we be asked to join a sports league with our teams? Not to mention we were founded in 1900 and the League had long been solidified by then.</p>

<p>JHU is the only institution to formally turn down an invitation to the Ivy League. It's true.</p>

<p>I've heard similar rumors, but from what source did you find that the JHU-Ivy League rumor is true? I find it hard to believe, since JHU is a Division III sports school (excluding LAX of course), and the Ivy League was formed primarily as a football league.</p>

I'm a student at CMU in my sophomore year, and it may interest any prospectives or people who are generally just curious to know, that CMU was actually invited to join the IVY league this year, and was invited in the past, but rejected the offer on the grounds that they did not want to change their innovative research techniques to fit the IVY league standards, which is similar to Georgetown University's decision not to join the IVY for self-preservation reasons. (Georgetown did not want to give up their Jesuit association)

I spoke to the Dean Provost of HSS at the Diversity Discussion dinner this week, and he relayed the information to me. As far as I know, it has not been publicized. He also told me that Carnegie Mellon has been invited previous years and has declined. The University is very proud of remaining an institution separate of the Ivy League Schools. I'm sure if you visited and spoke to one of the Deans or Faculty members they could tell you, but I was given the impression that the University does not necessarily want this information published for whatever reason. (Funding, who knows?) But the Deans are pretty friendly and I'm sure they would tell you if asked.
