Was it even worth applying ED? Do I even have a shot?

Male, Hispanic/Filipino/Greek

SAT - CR: 750, M - 680(weak), W - 730, combined 2160
ACT - 30
Math I - 700
Math II - 650
Physics - 620(clearly the weakest part of my application)

My school doesn’t have grades…so I can’t really give you that stat. BUT I will say that it would (hopefully) convert to a 4.0 unweighted. My reports are written in narrative form and have always been complimentary and very good.

In addition to senior classes, I’m also taking Basic Chinese pt I through Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth (A average, my first grade!)

Attended SPARK Program for Gifted Science Students at Brown in 7th grade, and Pre-College Program in “Putting Ideas Into Words” also at Brown in 9th grade.

Sports: Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball, Varsity Ultimate Frisbee(captain), recreational tennis & golf

Haiti thing: Since the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, I have been organizing benefit concerts for Haitian relief(duh). In March of 2010(concert 1), I raised $1500, March of 2011(concert 2), $900, and October of 2011(third and final high school concert), raised $4855, total of $7255. All of the proceeds have gone to a local organization with Vassar College called the Vassar Haiti Project. The money I donated is going to help rebuild the only music school in Haiti, Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince. I’m currently featured as a community member of the VHP, and in September of last year, I was honored by Vassar College and presented a check with the leader of the VHP to an executive member of Holy Trinity when a boys choir from the school came to do a concert at Vassar.

Sorry it’s so long, but any ideas?

Of course you have a shot. You have already submitted your application, so don’t dwell on something you can’t change. Have confidence in yourself and hope for the best.

okay okay thank you!

Looks pretty good! I had 600 Physics, 700 Math 2, 650 WR 710 M 510 CR SAT’s, I’m Asian, and got accepted ED, so you definitely have as much of a chance as many others, and it was worth it to apply early.

Awesome! Thanks! It’s ridiculous, decisions come out in just over two weeks! I’m so nervous! And dreading the fact that I will more than likely have to be doing more supplements after the fact haha!

Your stats are good. Don’t worry so much; you have applied and you know that you can’t change your stats, so just think positive for now. Besides, if you have applied to other schools, then chances are that you are accepted at one university.

You definitely have a shot. But just in case, make sure you have safeties lined up. I would say that to everyone, even a Valedictorian with perfect test scores! Good luck. :)

Thanks everyone! I have plenty of other schools lined up, 12 to be exact. If you’re curious of the list I’ll post it, but I won’t make you chance me on all of them because I can bet that nobody actually cares THAT much about the other schools I’m applying to haha. But really thank you for your kind words.

Why didn’t you ask before so we could save you a fee?

lol

you have an interesting as any CV. I don’t know why you’d take math I and math II, just do one, do a different one to show you have more in you, chances are the percentile in math 2 is higher anyway, and that counts more.

Sure, what are the other schools in case you don’t get into Brown, I’m interested in student’s overlaps, and why Brown?

I took both math I and math II because theoretically I felt like I was ready enough for math II, but the first time I took it I scored much lower than my current score, so I felt that I’d take it again and maybe take math I additionally to see if I would score better and I did. I wasn’t sure which test was weighed more (I know math II counts more, but would math II with a lower score outweigh a math I with a higher score? Also my math II percentile is lower than that of my math I, primarily because most people who happen to take the math II do really well in it, just like how there is a higher percentage of those who get a 5 on the BC calc than there are those who get a 3, and vice versa with the AB) Either way I just sent both, because I talked to the admissions counselor who is reading my transcript, and she said if I wasn’t sure which tests to send, to just send all of them and they’ll determine which are the best test scores.

The schools that I’m also applying to are: BU, NYU, GWU Colgate, Dartmouth, Tufts, Wesleyan(2nd choice), Harvard(for kicks, though I had a really great interview with them), Haverford, URoch, Union/Grad/Albany triple degree LIM program, and Middlebury.

My answer to why Brown sort of just reflect what I think my personality is and the environment I like to be in. I went to Brown in 7th grade and 9th grade as you see above and I just really loved the vibe that it gave off. Of course I wasn’t looking at it at a university level, but rather just a summer camp level, and I had a great time. As a university, I love Brown because when I visited as a prospective student, I felt that everyone who I spoke to, was legitimately interested in what I had to say. Everyone was passionate about learning for the sake of learning, and they were fundamentally curious people. I just could easily see myself happier than every if I were surrounded by thousands of people like I just described. Aside of it’s open curriculum and academic merit which I also do enjoy, it’s just a warm fuzzy environment, and the high school I attend, which has only a hundred students, also has a warm feel to it and I think that’s why I love Brown so much. It’s just so comfortable for me. A really good way to describe this is through performance, in a way.

If anyone here is a performer, I’m sure they know that adrenaline rush before they perform, the nauseated stomach and the sweaty palms and whatnot. I know I do. Even as musician of 10 years I still get that feeling before every show, maybe just at a less intense level.

When I arrived at Brown, I got that nauseous feeling, which if anyone can relate, is sort of the best and the worst feeling, all at the same time. It’s really difficult to describe but I think that any performer will understand.

And I also love Brown on a more superficial level cause Thayer St is so hip, the campus is beautiful, and you also have access to a small city. I really couldn’t ask for more in a school.

I don’t know, if/when I get rejected, it’s going to be rather tough for me because as you can tell, I’ve sort of invested my heart and soul into the school haha. Thankfully I found lots of similarities in Wesleyan, so I feel that if I could get in there I would have a perfectly great experience there. I’d just rather spend college at Brown.

That answer was extremely repetitive and kind of lengthy, but I like to write. Sorry!

I also think Wes is my second choice, for the same reasons as you. You are very articulate and passionate, and I’m sure your essays reflect as much. Good luck to both of us…Yeah, its hard not to fall in love with Brown, harder still to be jilted. Maybe we will see each other which ever way the pendulum swings…

I’m glad someone else is in the same boat as me! Except I did a little investigating, and your scores make me feel awful about mine haha, so you probs have a bit of an edge. But good luck to you man! Keep in touch! Send me a PM or something and we can talk about Brown and Wes and whatnot.

Thanks for the info. I find your schools interesting although split a bit into 2 camps? Good luck and don’t overthink it or over nitpick on scores and such.

Yeah, there are absolutely two different camps. Essentially one side is the small warm liberal artsy vibe, and the other is the large impersonal university feeling. The small environment really appeals to me because I come from one and it’s comfortable for me, and the big university thing is also cool because I haven’t ever really been in a scenario that large. I’ve never been just an anonymous face in the crowd, and it’s sort of something that I would like to be able to experience, hence my choices with NYU, BU, GWU etc.

Thanks for the kind words, BrownParent.
