Was UF your first choice?

To current students and/or students who have applied: was/is UF your first choice school? If not, what was/is?

It's been my dream college since I was literally around 7, but due to some unfortunate events in the past few years I am on pins and needles waiting for the decision. I met with an admission's officer last Thursday and discussed my situation with her and she said I would have had a really, really good chance of getting in if I had met the November 1st deadline...stupid me :(

If anyone else has any stories about their nerve-wracking admissions process, I would love to hear :)

I've had a lot of dream schools recently! :)

When I was a kid, it was always UMiami. Now, I think I'm trying to decide between UF, New College, and University of Illinois in addition to UMiami now. I already got accepted to UCF as a safety, and am applying to the honors college so I have somewhere to go.

yeah it was the only school i applied to

It's always been my dream school, but I didnt apply.

dvm258 - I have been looking into UMiami and New College as well, although I'm not sure about New College since the student body is <1,000 but I am still looking into it. I have applied to UCF as well, so we'll see what happens. Good luck during your admissions process, I hope wherever you go you love it!

ChamilitaryMayne - Are you a freshman this year? How do you like the school, has it met all of your expectations?

B05T0N - Why didn't you apply?

for me UF wasnt necessarily my dream school but it was in the list of schools I would have liked to attend.

UF is a great value for your buck. Ultimately my decision came down to that- great education for the least amount of money.

if anyone has any questions in particular about freshman year/application processes or w/e just message me.

good luck to all of you!

UF has been the only school I have ever thought of going to. I did research other schools because I knew if I didnt get in, I was not going to UCF if I could help it.

I looked a lot at small private school like Flagler but after visting the school I'm glad I didnt even have to apply there.

I went to a small highschool so I wanted to go to a big university.

OOS+beyond unqualified :/

I'm having the same concerns about New College. They have an excellent reputation for grad students, but I'm extremely worried about the social life. I've now visited it twice; once for the tour and again for the interview. The campus is just way too quiet! There's hardly anyone outside! (The visits were each on a Thursday and Friday afternoon, respectively.) Any of the other colleges, including small McDaniel in Maryland, (my extreme extreme safety, which I'm definitely getting a large scholarship to) seem to have a much more active student population, even if it isn't revolved around Greek life or partying.

yes I am a freshman and UF is great so far...I can't imagine myself anywhere else

It was the only school I applied to.

I guess I am the odd man out. UF was far from my top choice (but top instate). Dream was WUSTL, with 2. MIT, and 3. Emory.

dvm258,
My older D goes to New College and we were initally worried about the lack of students around, too. But they are there (they're just busy studying) and there's plenty of activities going on (usually late at night). She's very busy with school work, but is enjoying a good social life.

Younger D loves NCF, too, but is applying to UF and others she really likes so she can figure out will be best for her in her intended major.

If you walk around NCF, you will notice one thing unsual: many of the guys have long hair and many of the gals have short hair. Another odd thing is that their school mascot is the empty set ({}). I understand the students voted this into their constitution as a statement on their position on school sports. This should give you some insight into the culture there.

Hmm NCF seems a tad bit too conservative for me, although I am a bit conservative myself. I like a school that has a vast diversity which is why UF is the perfect school for me :)

NCF is anything but conservative. I'm from SRQ. The New College stereotype = very intelligent pot-smoking hippies.

NCF also has another distinction:

Florida college tops gay-friendly list -- Queer Lesbian Gay News -- Gay.com

That article has probably been a magnet. I've heard the student population is now something like 25% gay.

I suppose you could say a conservative Christian college is at one of the political spectrum and NCF is at the other end. So really, by definition, neither of these extremes can truly embody political diversity. UF has a great strength in this respect.

I have a friend who decided to go to New College and my teacher always poked fun at her for going to a "hippie college" lol. Dont know much about it other than it was a good fit for her.

"Hmm NCF seems a tad bit too conservative for me, although I am a bit conservative myself. I like a school that has a vast diversity which is why UF is the perfect school for me"

LOL NCF too conservative for you? What are you, Marx?

Also I don't think either of the state schools here outside of NCF are overtly political. The kids care more about beer and football than politics.

I meant conservative in the manner of the social lives of the students. I've only heard opinions of others and have not personally inquired any information about the college myself, but most of the opionions I have heard describe the student body as reclusive with a non-existent social life. But for all I know they could be party animals in stealth, haha :)
