General Comments: Could repeat sophomore year when I came here, but didn’t, and I didn’t have enough time to really acumulate awards. In short, not prepared well enough.

Summer Activities: N/A

Essays: I wrote my essay while I was in a spontaneous vacation in New York City. I wrote it in our hotel room and in a pizza shop by the Empire State Building, haha. It felt like my essay was really reflective my personality, of who I am as a person. It wasn’t super quirky (except for a few puns I made), but it was personal and really showed the sort of person that I am.

Teacher Recommendation: Very strong. I love my teacher and we’ve been through a lot together. She is basically my second mom<3
Counselor Rec: Also very strong. I went through a lot if health issues and the counselor was always there for me, she is lovely and we are quite close as well.
Additional Rec: Another teacher, who I am also extremely close to. The letter was very touching for me, so I suppose admissions must have thought so too.
Interview: Yes. I had an interview with a student who was a junior, and we got along amazingly! In fact we became good friends and hung out a bit later, after his last interview ended.

Other: Ahhhhhh

State (if domestic applicant): Colorado
Country (if international applicant): USA~
Intended major(s): Psychology-Neuroscience-Philosophy (PNP)
School Type: Public school, not very competitive…like at all, if I’m being honest. But I still have school pride :’)
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Less than $20k per year
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, athlete (although I won’t be a student athlete)

Reflection: <3

Strengths: Letters of recc, essay, ECs, showed interest
Weaknesses: ACT
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my personality and perspective on life and learning really fits into the WashU way of thinking, and I think my application reflected that really well. I truly feel like I was made for this school, and I’m glad that feeling was mutual.

General Comments: INTEREST!!!
I showed so much interest and I think that was a huge part of it. I had an on-campus info session, campus tour, and interview. Besides that, I applied ED, which is the ultimate sign of interest.

Decision: Accepted!!

College of Arts and Sciences

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1410 C&R:710 M:700
SAT II: none sent
GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9 unweighted. 4.59 weighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/135
AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology-4, Cal AB-4, Stat-4, Chinese-5 (the only 5 I’ve got, lol) Took 9 APs total before senior year-got 3s and 2s on the rest.
Senior Year Course Load:
AP US Gov, AP Eng Lit, AP Music Theory, Instrument Ensemble, AP Cal BC, AP Macroeconomics, Physics (regular), P.E.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NONE…

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

Flutist of Wind Ensemble 9th-12th (Second chair flute player) perform in school concert, participate in regional flute competition, train beginners and other flute members
Family Responsibilities 9th-12th (translator) paying bills, schedule and attend their medical appointments, etc
EMERGE student 12th (member)
Student Council 9th (member)
Wood’s Project 11th: (member)

Job/Work Experience: waitress (11th)
Volunteer/Community service: Kid’s Robotics Academy (~3 weeks) summer before senior year
Essays: About my father’s really bad smoking habit and health decline, but my exterior indifference to it because of our bad relationship and our huge ego to not show each other love/worry. Slightly pessimistic, but ended on a tone of acceptance. 8/10. Not the best topic but the essay was genuinely “me”.
Teacher Recommendation: I’m a pretty shy person-don’t talk much to teachers. My AP Bio teacher wrote one for me, not sure how well he writes. He really likes me though, known me since 8th grade and I always go to him during lunch for homework help. (8/10)
Counselor Rec: Slightly close, she knows me as a good student-that’s all. (7/10)
Interview: With an art major girl, all I did was giggle and gush over how WashU is so “me”. Talked about WashU’s weather, food, dorm, blahblah. Oh, and talked about my majors too and what I’d take part in if I was WashU student. (plus some awkward nervous laughs) I don’t think the interview helped my application much ._.

Other
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Intended major(s): Choosing between a major good for pre-med (chem, bio, etc) or Music performance major while still being a pre-med
School Type: Sharpstown International. Small public, low-income school, Hispanic majority, pretty bad test scores. Not competitive at all, except between me and the salutatorian (he got into Duke, full ride) AP class are not hard -easy to get As, but preparing for the exam is hard (because lack of discipline from teachers)
Ethnicity: Chinese-American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <30,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first-generation, demonstrated interest with fly-in and attended one WashU college booth
Reflection: I can’t believe I got in. Unrealistic…

Strengths: GPA, my loyalty to flute and concert band, translator for parents show I care about family, my essay was genuine, my AP Bio’s rec probably
Weaknesses: My academic profile in general: SAT, no SAT IIs, lack of 5s in AP score, lack of leadership in EC.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I don’t force myself to do extracurricular that I have no interest in but I do experiment/try them out. My love for flute will transfer to college-as a hobbie or a major (not sure yet) I took the most rigorous course load in my school just for the challenge, even if I don’t do well on them. My essay was genuine and I think they saw it.

General: I also got full-ride and I still can’t fully digest the fact that I got accepted AND no financial burden!! To those who don’t think you have a chance, IT’S ALWAYS WORTH A TRY. The trick that worked for me is to be genuine. Don’t write about what you think colleges want to hear, don’t force yourself to stay in clubs just to build your college profile, do what you love and will continue to do in college!!!

Essays: 9 or 10/10 I’d say; It was about my cancer survival story, which I think made me stand out
Teacher Rec: Great, AP Calc teacher is very fond of me
Counselor Rec: Superb, she knew me well through having cancer in school
Other Rec: Honors Chem teacher really liked me too, so great!
Interview: Comfortable, went alright but was low pressure

Other

State: Montana
Major: Cognitive Neuroscience, either under PNP or Psychological and Brain Sciences
School Type: Public, very few advanced courses available
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Woman
Income Bracket: 300k+, definitely not eligible for need-based aid
Hooks: I sent in an article published locally that focused on my life and my battle with cancer and later knee surgery, and that really must have shown admissions counselors that type of person that I am!

Reflection

Strengths: Great scores/rank, stood out as a Montanan and cancer survivor
Weaknesses: lack of many competitive courses to take in high school
Why I think I was accepted: I think the article was huge, as it showed counselors that I am the type of person who would fit well on campus while my scores and recs show that I am academically capable too

Comments: Like everyone else, interest is key! Besides visiting, interviewing, and applying ED, I also e-mailed the admissions office and specific counselors every once in a while to keep in touch. Good Luck!

Counselor Rec: 5/10 Doesn’t know me well, probably very generic

Other

State (if domestic applicant): IN
Country (if international applicant): USA
Intended major(s): Bio
School Type: Residential
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 70-80k with large medical bills

Reflection

Strengths: Hook, showed a lot of interest, rigorous high school
Weaknesses: GPA, needed financial aid, test scores are stellar
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It’s probably the story of a thousand paper cuts. I wasn’t a super outstanding applicant to begin with, and I think going into such a flooded major/needing lots of financial aid to attend was the last nail in the coffin.

Strengths: GPA, ECs, basically everything accept test scores
Weaknesses: test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m a legacy and I applied ED, that gave me a little wiggle room with the SAT score, otherwise I feel like I am a solid applicant

General Comments: Work hard but make it fun! I don’t count volunteer hours, so I don’t consider many things I do to be community service. It was really surprising when I started my application to see just how much I do. As I mentioned before, I left stuff out and listed only the big things. I’m so proud to be a bear! I didn’t show that much interest. I applied for one scholarship and signed up for the newsletter and that was it lol. While I’m disappointed, I’m also glad that my spot will go to someone who (hopefully) cares more about WashU than I did. URM doesn’t help that much.

Strengths: GPA, essays, URM
Weaknesses: No interest basically; average scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: DEMONSTRATED INTEREST!!!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Cornell, UCSB, Tulane, UC Davis, UC Irvine

I got rejected from CAS for a major in Chemistry. My scores are: 35 ACT, SAT II (800 Math II, 800 Chemistry). WGPA 4.59, UGPA 3.95. Major interest in STEM, did a research internship last summer. I think I wasn’t accepted because I didn’t show a ton of interest in the school. We live and we learn; hopefully other decisions go better for all of us.
