Interview:

A very nice Junior student interviewed me! Try to be personable/likable, basically be yourself! If you’re applying to WashU you’re probably passionate about something. Let that show. Don’t necessarily brag about your achievements, but try to connect and really show them that you’d be someone that they’d want to hang out with. Most interviews on campus are done by upper class men, so it’s pretty casual, but do come prepared with “why WashU” and what you can contribute to it! Have questions! Don’t let this go to waste!!

Other:
Intended Major: Economics & Strategy
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Really Average Public ~ 2000kids
Ethnicity: Hispanic Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 140k-160k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Half URM, First generation immigrant

Reflection

Strengths: Business Oriented ECs, Essay, Recs, Demonstrated a lot of interest (ED’ed, visited for their discovery weekend, interviewed, emailed, and called)

Weaknesses: GPA, Test Scores, basically my stats

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

WashU. has such a dynamic friendly student body. They want people who can contribute to that friendly and feel-good atmosphere. I honestly thought I was going to get rejected or deferred, but what pulled me through was probably my subjectives (strengths listed as above). Stats honestly aren’t everything! Remember that DEMONSTRATED INTEREST REALLY HELPS AT THIS SCHOOL. Also try to show yourself through your essay writing, don’t be a robot.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t heard from anywhere else. Just so happy to be accepted!! This is SO surreal!

If you’re worrying about getting in, don’t. There’s no point. Channel that energy into school, your ECs, or really just showing Wash.U. that they’re your number 1 (don’t be annoying though). This site has given me so much stress, I would recommend that people go on it not to look at “Chance Me’s” but to get some good feedback. You are much more than you think you are.

Good luck to y’all! #WUSTL20

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I wasn’t actually that confident in my common app essay, but with revisions I’d say it ended up being 8/10. I was nervous because it showcased an academic interest of mine (neuroscience) instead of focusing on other aspects of my personality.

Weaknesses: Not a whole lot of volunteering/ECs. My ACT scores weren’t super high, but decent.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly opened it assuming I would be rejected. I really don’t know the reason I got in.

General Comments: Really surprised to get in. I hope this speaks for future decisions, as I will be banking on them much more than WashU as they are closer to home and more suitable. But, I feel extremely grateful that a school like this accepted me.
