i’m a finalist as well! i’m very excited - see y’all at selection weekend!
My daughter is a finalist!
I was named a finalist. I have a 1570 SAT, 4.76 GPA, 9 IB courses(7 of which are two years long), and 1 AP course. I am also our IB President, a national merit scholarship finalist, and Eagle Scout, run cross country, and winter and spring track.
I’m a finalist! Was NOT expecting that as an international student… Speechless…
Curious how many are ED vs. RD. In other posts, they always show there’s very few ED - with the assumption being why offer you if you’re already going. The school says it’s not true. It could simply be the reality is - there are many more overall RD applicants than ED so therefore there are more RD winners.
Hi all! Congrats to all the finalists! Is anyone able to access the “Meet Your Fellow Finalists” tab in the Johnson Portal? The page is empty when I click on it.
it was like that for me too! i just refreshed over and over until i got it
Weinstein scholarship
“It is a unique opportunity for students of the Jewish faith”, so it is not for everyone.
They’re obviously trying to increase their Jewish population. Rhodes also has a Jewish scholarship. Vanderbilt had a push to increase their Jewish population years back (I don’t think they had a Jewish specific scholarship). They now have a 15% Jewish population, I believe. Anyway, I tried to lure one of my (Jewish) kids into applying to W&L, saying “look, they want Jewish kids!” to no avail. Mine is sick of being the “go to” Jew for everything.
I’m also a Finalist! Super excited.
I have a 36 ACT, 4.0 GPA, and 800 on Lit and US Hist and 760 on Math II SAT Subject Tests. I’m an Eagle Scout and CAP Mitchell Award recipient with a bunch of community service, leadership, and especially history-related volunteering and jobs. And this is going to sound obsequious lol but I actually wrote a half dozen online articles about W&L’s and Lexington’s history since I visited campus right in the middle of an internship with TheClio.com where I was given free reign to research basically whatever historic sites I wanted so I figured why not?
W&L has scholarships for people from different geographies as well as Weinstein. While I’m sure most schools would like to boost diversity in many way, it more likely comes down to generous alumni who have donated significantly. I mean, they have scholarships for kids from Columbia, SC, a high school in WV - so clearly someone puts money behind them.
Anyway who gets in, scholarship or not, has a lot to be proud of.
Here are one guy’s thoughts about the ED vs. RD stats.
The best-of-the-best high school students are not as likely to apply ED because they are typically applying to the Ivies and a few other nationally renown top notch schools. In doing so, they do not want to be bound to a single school. Also, Harvard makes their early action (they do not offer ED) applicants declare that they are not applying ED (or EA) to any other private institution. This is more likely the reason W&L selects more Johnson Scholars from the RD crowd…because they are more competitive overall.
Best wishes to all during this admission season!
Two-hundred finalists? That’s a lot of interviews to fit inside of the 10 hours they have scheduled!
You have a point, but the driver of all merit scholarships at all schools is to entice kids to attend that school. Full stop. There is absolutely no need to entice an ED applicant to attend, the school already knows they are coming.
Your argument has an underlying assumption that the best applicants go RD (because they are hoping for Ivy). The logical follow on is that the ED applicants/accepted students are weaker. Really? How does that serve W&L’s institutional needs? (“Hey, let’s take a lot of weaker applicants!” is not what W&L is saying)
I would argue that it is not just ivy hopefuls applying RD but kids whose families are in that donut hole (too much $$ for financial aid, not enough to comfortably full pay) that are applying RD and hoping for merit aid. And further, hoping to compare awards at several schools.
cinnamon1212,
It seems that you may have misconstrued my post. Your third paragraph is a restatement of my argument.
W&L is rich, offering 44 full-rides. Many other colleges do not have that many full-ride merit-scholars.
I’m sorry to hear that but I wish you the best for admission! I’m not a finalist for the Johnson, but I am a finalist for the Dallas Alumni Scholarship. I have a 33 ACT, 4.6 weighted GPA (3.84 unweighted), and many IB and AP classes. Does anyone know if being a finalist for this scholarship indicates likelihood of admission? I know being a finalist for the Johnson means you will most likely get in, but does anyone know about the regional scholarships?
I am curious but don’t want to have my daughter ask. I figure to go with the flow. It is definitely the case on the Johnson.
With your #s, you’ll have great opportunities no matter where you end up. But yeah, the full tuition is nice. But they do have a GPA requirement so that does scare me.
Does anyone know when regular decisions are released. It’s by April first on the site but wondering if others have insights to other timing
As their website says, W&L meets 100% need WITHOUT A LOAN, good luck to everyone!
