General Comments:

@ayeekayyy Congratulations on receiving your likely letter! I received a similar letter today as well. It said something like “I am delighted to tell you that you stood out as one of a small set of applicants who seems particularly well matched to W&L this year. The Admissions Committee enthusiastically expects to formally offer you admission in March.” It also had an invitation to visit campus (I think). I’m curious, though. Do they send those to every accepted student or to their strongest applicants like the Ivies do? Congrats again on your acceptance

Did you guys get these letters via email or snail mail?

@StomachAcheDad I got mine via email. That’s usually the case with most schools, except William and Mary, which sends post cards with hand written remarks.

@S.alazar_sly I believe they only send it to the most qualified or best fit candidates for the school. I also received an invitation for a campus visit over spring break and will most likely attend. Congrats on your success and maybe we will both attend WL in the fall (depending on what school I decide I want to go to).

@ayeekayyy Where else did you apply? Did you receive likely letters from any other schools?

@S.alazar_sly and @ayeekayyy are you Johnson Finalists?

@katespeare I personally didn’t apply for it.

I don’t remember if it had a separate application though. :-/

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9.5, I wrote my common app about how I am a bridge between two worlds coming from a low-income, single immigrant mother background yet going to school in a very affluent, homogenous community. May not be completely polished because I changed my topic a week before submitting my common app
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10, from my English teacher of 3 years who knows me extremely well. She knows a lot about my background and I did very well in her classes. Called her my ‘school mom’
Teacher Rec #2: 8, from my Calculus teacher, I got a B in his class but always went in for tutoring and showed dedication to learning the material. He wrote me my rec for MOSTEC too which helped him get to know me
Counselor Rec: 8, she was new my junior year so I made a really big effort to get to know her but she also had 360+ recs to do. I was the first one she got to so maybe not so bad. I was always in her office for things like gov school and MOSTEC
Additional Rec: 10, from my church leader who knew me for 4 years through my consistent volunteering, also knew my family background and educational goals
9, got a peer rec from my close friend. She emphasized my dedication to learning, curiosity, and service

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first gen student, low-income, many childhood struggles brought up in essay

Reflection

Strengths: My summers were very productive- an internship, gov school, and MOSTEC helped a lot. Emphasis on community service and passion for social science. Photography business is unique. Hooks are probably helpful
Weaknesses: Test Scores, also I got 3 B’s my junior year
Why you think you were accepted: I think overall my application is very strong, my extracurriculars and service stand out
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far I have been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill, WashU, USC-Columbia, Clemson, NC State, Fordham. Deferred from UVA, Rejected ED from Columbia

General comments: I think my extracurriculars, service, essays, grades, and unique summer programs really made up for my lower test scores

@S.alazar_sly What are your stats?

Just FYI, W&L plans to release RD decisions on March 23.

@ChefHoovisan Just FYI, there are these things called likely letters.

I’m quite aware of that.

@ChefHoovisan just curious where you saw this (the 3/23 date) as the only thing I can find on their website is 4/1. Thanks.

Abe–I simply asked an admissions officer. I sent you a PM with more detail…

Thanks! These last couple of weeks of waiting are the hardest…

Congrats to those accepted (and their list of acceptances)! I was encouraged by these stats, but my son is neither URM nor first generation, so I suspect his bar will be higher as he will have more competition with like students. If anyone has any stats or anecdotes on this would love to hear them (only so we can guess chances, not to start any kind of argument or make a point about these factors in admissions). Thanks!

@ChefHoovisan Do you know what time they will be released?

I did not ask and do not know with certainty, but I am presuming an 8PM release based on the past few years.
