Washington and Lee University Regular Decision 2022 results thread

Accepted w/ some great finaid! 34 ACT, 3.9 GPA, strong essays explaining personal circumstances, some ECs.
I’m considering W&L seriously, but am still waiting for other schools to get back to me. Best of luck for everyone on the waitlist or still waiting for other schools!

DD already received her admission packet in the mail yesterday.

@blingme234
A 35 ACT and 8 AP and waitlisted?

Am I missing something? Are you reporting false #’s?

The same school sending early likely letters to kids with far less impressive stats?!

Seriously, tell me you are making up those numbers.

Could ask same question of @bestday

Colleges use a holistic approach, not just a test score for admittance. My DD had a lower ACT score then 35 and was accepted but had 15 AP’s and in the top 2% of her class. Many leadership roles, EC’s and selective summer programs… You really can’t just look at one or two numbers and compare students. Essays are also read to get an idea if the student is the kind of student that they think will fit in well with the school. There are just so many factors that a test score cannot tell you.

15 APs?

Wow! Outstanding. Sounds like your DD was clearly qualified on the academic rigor function.

Still, seems like a few of the waitlisted applicants were flat out more qualified than some of the applicants that were chased with the likely letter. There is no other way I can interpret this.

Something seems amiss.

@Otterrushchair yield protection

@penpal11

Please elaborate.

Are you saying that they thought that the exceedingly qualified students were not demonstrating interest and using W&L as a safety school?

@Otterrushchair Possibly. I have no evidence of this though.

I wondered that also. Waitlisted S not only had excellent #s but was also president of his NHS, captain of his its academic team, varsity athlete, HOBY awardee, lots of volunteering hours, etc so I think he was a good candidate for the holistic approach too. However, I don’t think he had much of a dialog with the school and his interview was late. @penpal11 may have a point. I also read a proposal by a former ivy admissions officer that all qualified applications be thrown into a mixer and picked at random. Because thats what the process becomes. I dont believe there is any difference in ability or work ethic between the applicants who are accepted and those who are not. And while I am disappointed that S was not accepted I think W&L should be given credit for not just chasing the numbers and the rankings like so many colleges do. Good luck to all. You will love college!

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common app (8.5)- My essay had a pretty unique topic; I wrote about some school district politics concerning the new indoor pool. Might have been better if I’d had someone proofread it but I have a thing about people I’m close with reading my writing.

W&L Supplements (9 for both)- For the Why W&L essay, I wrote about how I would benefit from a liberal arts education at a school that’s strong in many subjects, the Mock Con, how I appreciated W&L’s respect for tradition while still looking forward, and the Honor Code. For the short statement about 1 extracurricular activity, I wrote about YIG and how I helped grow my delegation from 20 to almost 50 people.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: PoliSci/History teacher- 9, she loved me and let me read it, it practically glowed although her grammar wasn’t spectacular, I actually printed it out because it was so nice!
Teacher Rec #2: German teacher- 8.5, I’m very strong in German classes and this teacher really likes me but I did slack off a bit in the non-college level German classes as they were too easy for me. Didn’t get to read but I assume it’s similar to one she wrote for a scholarship competition, which was really good.
Counselor Rec: ??, never got to read and I don’t know the guy at all really lol
Interview: 11/10, we got along amazingly and she said she was incredibly excited to recommend me and would write a glowing review!

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Business administration or econ
State (if domestic applicant): MN
School Type: Medium-ish rural public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: a smidge under 100k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, legacy etc.): first gen, geography (only one current student from MN)??

Reflection

Strengths: UWGPA, all ACT subscores except math, work experience, interest
Weaknesses: named leadership positions, ACT math, awards
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I strongly suspect that geography helped a lot, I’m the only accepted student in the GroupMe from MN. My essay topic was pretty unique and might have helped because W&L is so strong in politics. I did submit a couple of music supplements at the recommendation of the band director so maybe that helped too.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Villanova, Trinity (SA), Rose-Hulman, Concordia-Moorhead, Alabama, U of North Dakota, UTulsa
Waitlisted: Case Western Reserve
Denied: Notre Dame

General Comments: Excited to join the W&L Class of 2022!!
