Washington and Lee vs Rutgers Honors College

Hello!

I’ve narrowed down my list (based on finances) to Washington and Lee University and Rutgers University in New Brunswick (Honors College). Both would be free because of financial aid and a merit scholarship at Rutgers.

I’m hoping to major in Math and minor/double major with either Economics/Public Policy or Biology/Public Health. I’m interested in Public Policy or Public Health in either case, but Washington and Lee doesn’t offer majors or minors in these. I’m hoping to get a Master’s degree or even a medical degree, so I’m not too worried about majoring in something equivalent to Public Policy or Public Health for undergrad.

I am LGBT and aware that Washington and Lee is very conservative, but I’ve always wanted to go to a small school and Rutgers is the polar opposite. I’ve visited Rutgers before and although it was nice, it felt too big for me. At this point, I am leaning towards W&L, but I’d like some more insight.

Which school looks more promising academically and for my career? Does anyone have familiarity with the conservative nature of Washington and Lee?

Sorry for the long message. Thanks!

About 3/4 of students at W&L join fraternities and sororities, so that may be a prominent aspect of campus life that you may want to consider in terms of whether you would like or dislike that.

Thanks for replying!

I doubt I’d be interested in greek life, but I think it’d be okay if I can make friends outside of that.
