Washington DC transportation / getting to the GW campus

How do you go from Dulles Airport to the GW campus? I know there is a metro rail station on campus, but I am unsure about the Dulles part.

The best way is to take the Blue Supershuttle, because there is no direct way to come from Dulles. 35-40 minutes ride.

You can do it by public transportation too; take the 5A bus right in front of the airport to Roslyn metro station, and then go 1 stop over to Foggy Bottom.

on the topic of public transportation, i’m assuming GW students buy metro passes? if so, how long do they last and how much do they cost?

Is transportation from Baltimore airport too far? Plane tickets are cheaper from west coast but may not be if ground transport is a lot more.

Kurt- I just researched these things called “Smart Cards.” They cost about $30 and you can travel on bus and metro. You can add money on them when you get low. Web site is MetroOpensDoors.com or (202) 637-7000. If you don’t want to buy a Smartcard then the fare is $1.35 one way. Hope this helps!

from Baltimore is the same as Dulles. (I have done both). both have shuttles. taxis also. cheaper by shuttle.

Waves/kurt: What you are talking about is called a Smartrip card. The card itself costs $5 (if you buy it online it comes with $25 pre-loaded onto the card). The metro fares in DC are a little weird; they change both depending on where you are going, and if it’s rush hour or not. The card just makes going through the metro faster; it does NOT change the price of the fare, nor are there yearly/monthly fares like in other metro systems. Use the “trip planner” feature on wmata.com to figure out how much your journey will cost.

nbg: Baltimore is far, but do-able. It is possible to use public transportation, though it may be confusing if it’s the first time you are in DC. I’ll give you directions anyway though: If you are coming in on a weekday, take the free shuttle from the airport to the train station. From there, take the MARC train to Union Station (it costs $6), and then take the metro from Union Station to GW (transfer lines at Metro Center). If it’s a weekend, take the B30 express bus ($3; you need exact change) to Greenbelt, and then take the metro to GW (transfer lines at L’Enfant Plaza).

If that sounds too complicated, just take the blue supershuttle to GW; I think it’s like $35.

I should also add that GW is trying to get a student discount on metro fare for students, but it hasn’t worked yet. Hopefully soon!

I think we took the blue shuttles’ competitor and for three people it cost 77 dollars plus tip. It wasn’t a bad ride. (Baltimore)

you can go on line for pricing./reservations

thanks for responding, gwsenior. i was hoping there were bi-annual passes like when i was studying in europe. ah well.

Another question about get to GW…

how to get GW from Washington Union Station (the train station) ??

thx :)

via public transportation: Follow the signs at Union to the Metro. Take the line going towards Shady Grove. Get off at Metro Center, and go downstairs to transfer to the Blue/Orange line. Take either the Blue line towards Franconia-Springfield, or the Orange Line towards Vienna. Get off at Foggy Bottom, and you’re at GW!

A cab from Union Station to GW doesn’t cost much though (around $6, maybe up to $10 during rush hour). There is a cab line right outside of the station.

How much is a cab from the airport?
Luggage issues

replyasap: There are 3 airports that serve DC, so it depends which one you are flying into. A cab from National Airport (the one closest to DC) isn’t going to be much at all (maybe $12). If you are coming from Dulles or BWI though, a cab would be VERY expensive. You would want to take the SuperShuttle, which will take you in a van straight to GW, and that would be $20-$35 each way (see [SUPERSHUTTLE - Airport Shuttle Transportation | LAX SFO DEN PHX DFW TPA JFK BWI IAD SAN DCA SMF MCI IAH LGA MSP EWR AUS SNA HOU BUR DAL OAK BNA ONT LGB RDU SJC AZA ISP PTP PIE Airports](http://www.supershuttle.com/) for details).
