well lets see. i had an on campus scholarship one, and got asked some strange questions -What shakespeare character so you identify with most? What would be your dream job if money were not an issue? (haha i said cattle baron, idk what came over me). and then the typical what do you feel you can bring to the community, what do you like most about W&L, a question about the honor code, etc.

Wow, those are some interesting questions, especially the Shakespeare one.

when i went for my interview, not one for a scholarship but just a visit, i was asked questions about my political beliefs, my thoughts on my family, what i wanted to do both at school and in life, my interests, all the basics. however, what i liked most was the informality of it. it was more of a conversation than an interview. it was fun, it really was. also be ready, because if your parents are with you, they will bring them up for the last few minutes.

I went for the Johnson interview too :)

My questions were something along the lines of:

“Which character in Closer (I had mentioned it was my favourite movie) do you think has the most integrity?” (apparently I had misheard because one of the professors went “Well, that wasn’t what I was asking, I had asked if any character had integrity at all” lol)

“Who would you want as a professor at the school?”

I really liked the interviews Sad thing was I didn’t like the school as much as I thought I would :(

so it seems like regular admissions questions are normal and johnson questions can be a bit out there
for my interview I had pretty basic questions and then we got into questions about my interest in government, related activities that i do, etc. I remember one specific question was what do you think is the most important issue. That said, I have a friend who got if you had a super power, what would it be and why–this was during a regular interview, but her interest was basically tennis.

I’ve done both, Johnson interview and on-campus admissions interview. For the most part, the admissions officers at W&L are quite pleasant people; the admissions interview feels very informal, but one must maintain one’s focus of course. Those admissions interviews typically are not used against you, unless, of course, you walk in with some sort of weapon and give manicial, darting gazes to the admissions officer at regular intervals.

Anyway, the Johnson interviews are wholly different from the admissions interviews, especially those Johnson interviews that are with the students. The professors are tough and probing, but the students are known to ask (in my opinion) rediculous questions. For example, “How many ping pong balls does it take to fill an airplane?” or “What aisle of the supermarket would you say best characterizes you?” or, even better, “If you were in a room totally filled with tennis balls, what would you do with them?” However, for an admissions interview, you won’t need to worry about that type of thing.
