I'm applying to both of these schools and I constantly go back and forth between which one I would go to if I got accepted to both. Which one do you think is a better overall school? and not that this will affect my decision but which one is harder to get into assuming you live out of state? Any help would be appreciated because I really cant decide!

Hrm....well I applied to both schools - W&L as choice #3 and W&M as choice #7.

For me, if I go to either school, it'll just be the one that gives me the most money in merit or financial aid.

Although yesterday I talked to a Georgetown senior who knew someone who transferred to Georgetown from W&M, and they had some not-so-positive remarks about W&M. But of course there are downsides to W&L too.

If you are accepted into both schools and have the chance to visit them, use the campus visits as an important factor in deciding which school is more of a fit for you.

I was thinking of applying to W&M (it's a very nice school), but I decided it was a little too big to be ideal. Since I was already in love with a range of schools from safety to reach, I figured the extra effort wasn't worth it if I wasn't absolutely smitten by W&M.

I'm applying to both, and I'd have to think long and hard about it. Since I'm going to do ROTC, having VMI is right next door to W&L makes me want to go to W&L more than W&M. Both schools are really awesome, and Williamsburg is sorta funny little town because of the tourists that want to see colonial America.

I looked at both schools and picked W&L for size, location, academics and of course the honor system.

Williamsburg is a fun touristy-town but after 11 years in NYC, I am so sick of tourists.

I also looked at both schools and chose W&L for the same reasons that Dima did. I also didn't really like W&M's campus nearly as much as W&L's, but that's a subjective and personal thing.

Granted, this is for grad, but I would have chosen W&M over W&L.

Mainly, I'm a city person, and Lex is out in the middle of nowhere. Really out in the middle of nowhere. I'm from an area where a 20 minute drive is a long trip... and, with the nearest Target and Staples being an hour away, it's a bit much. I need my Starbucks and 24-hour bagels - no dice in Lex. I also like slightly larger schools and environments... this does get to be like middle school after a while.

One notable difference is that W&L is conservative and W&M is liberal - and both are very much so. W&L is also a highly endowed school, whereas W&M is dependent upon state funds, being a state school (which can have its drawbacks).

Be forewarned that it's hard to get around Lex without a car - it's a small town, but, unless you really like walking, you have to drive to the grocery store (a longish walk from campus) and CVS. Campus notices are great for asking for rides to and from airports (or even other states!), so W&L has adapted to that... but heed the warning. There is really no form of public transportation, and, besides driving, there is no good way to get to and from DC. Contrast W&M, which at least does have some form of public transportation and a nearby airport and Amtrak.

This is a die-hard city girl talking... but even I appreciate parts of the monastic life out here.

keep in mind that this is a very biased opinion, but i would choose washington and lee over william and mary, definatly. They are both great schools with beautiful campusus, but i thoght the people were so much nicer at w&l. When i visited william and mary i felt like everyone there was depressed. i honestly felt like i saw so many unhappy people walking around, and its hard to actually notice that someone is unhappy just by watching them walk around, but i actually did. at washington and lee the people were so friendly and many of them stopped to talk or just say hi. now perhaps you can just attribute that to the speaking tradition, but they genuinly just seemed to like where they were better. when i compared notes with some of my friends, they actually noticed the exact same thing. maybe its not true, maybe i just caught it on a bad weekend, but i couldnt spend four years with people who were miserable. id be depressed by the time i finished.

Wow, hellohello123, I noticed the EXACT same thing. I just got a very gloomy feeling the whole time I was there... everything from the people to the buildings just gives off this dark and sad feeling. It's hard to explain unless you go visit.
