Washington Mentorship Program

I wasn’t admitted to the Fall '09 semester but the school is offering a Washington Mentorship Program for the Fall and then enrollment for the Spring '10 semester. Does anyone know what this program is?

Side Note: They have me down as female on the letters but I am a male. I checked my application and it clearly says male. Is there any chance if I call them they can reconsider my app or is this final?

There is a thread on here somewhere about the Mentorship program - it sounds really interesting. It's a mix of interning and classes it sounds like - I think if you like American you should strongly consider it. Do you know what you want to major in?

Yes, I want to major in international studies.
AU is my top choice so I'm going to talk to my counselor about it come monday.
I also e-mailed my admissions rep and him about the sex mix up and asked for more info on wmp if possible

if you do an web search of the Washington Mentorship Program there will be a link to a discussion from last year. You should read it. Good luck to you.

I was also offered this program but I feel second rate. Not to mention the price is pretty steep since they don't offer financial aid. Anyone else have more recent/current info about this program?

Danny -

You can call admissions and ask about this. You are accepted for Spring 2010. You do not have to take part in the Washington Program. It is costly and exists only to allow you to enter with the credits needed to graduate in spring 2013. You could opt to take courses at a community college.

I get the "second rate" thing but thinking about how demographics have made this the largest applicant pool to college ever, you got an acceptance, not a wait list or rejection. Considering how popular our new president is with young people especially, I would not be surprised if DC schools had record applications this year and then some.

It does seem to be a pretty nice program. And a good way to get some of those Gen Ed requirements out of the way in small seminars with a group of people that you will no doubt get to know pretty well and bond with. I think that American is interesting to a lot of students because of its location in DC. If you at all considered AU because you are interested in government in any way, this seems like a program that would be of real value. I think it is surprising that it is not an option for everyone.

Don't be turned off or feel second rate. Instead, make an effort to attend the accepted student day and find out as much as you can about it. I bet you can even be put in touch with students who have been through the program to get their feedback.

Good luck to you and congratulations on your acceptance to AU.

I got into the same program…Im still thinking about it but IT LOOKS really good.If i end up goin to AU i will probably attend the program. Is a great way to start college and you will get the credits u need to graduate in spring 2013.

My son was also accepted into the WMP. Although he knows Washington, D.C., he’s never lived in the U.S. (we’re in Europe). So I think this would be an ideal transition for him. His letter was also addressed with a “Ms.” which was a bit disconcerting. I understand it is a rather intense program; my concern is that there is one counselor for all 100 students, something for which the LAC’s he’s been accepted to (Bard, Skidmore, Dickinson, Goucher, etc.) distinguish themselves. Congrats for your acceptance!

I was admitted to this as well, but it’s impossible for me without financial aid!

My S is just finishing his first year at AU. He, too, was accepted as a WMP student for the fall. He was very excited to have the opportunity to do an internship his freshman year. It also eased him into college life.
My S is very involved in politics, so he worked for a State Sen. on Capital Hill. It was the experience of a lifetime. He applied and found the internship on his own. The guidance isn’t the greatest, however, if you are a motivated student, you will have no problem.
If you have an area of interest and you are motivated it is a wonderful opportunity. I think a mistake they make is promising to help you find great internships. They do offer opportunities, but they aren’t areas that my S would have been interested. They offer jobs in non-profits, which are fine if that is your area of interest.
We thought it might be a problem that first semester he would not be on campus. I have to tell you that the dorms are nicer on Tenley!! Granted you are three to a room (my son got lucky and only had two-so his room was huge-he also lucked out with a great roommate). Second semester he was able to move on campus. If you send your registration in early and there is room, you will have the same opportunity.
All in all he is very happy with his choice at AU. He did not have any problems moving again at semester to campus. He met even more people. Let me know if you have more questions.

Let me add that it indeed is an expensive propostition. But if you can swing it, you are getting experience that you can put on your resume. As an AU parent, I am very impressed with the university and the opportunities they make available to their students, I don’t just mean in the WMP program.
There are always job opportunities mentioned in the daily AUToday (daily communication email).

I made my deposit and I’m really excited about going, but I have not received anything from the school besides the “we received your deposit” notice 3 different times. Have you guys not received anything as well or should I call the school and see what’s up?

^ the same for my D . We sent the deposit of $600 and still waiting to hear from AU… we don’t know what is next… she also enrolled in the orientation program in June… Maybe we should call…

I haven’t enrolled for an orientation, I don’t know how. I honestly don’t know anything. how did your D do that?

If you paid your deposit online, you must have created a “myamerican” account. Sign in, click the “Events and Activities” link, then the “New Student Checklist”-- From there you can sign up for orientation, submit a photo for your id card, etc. Also, check your american student email account for the daily updates. Good luck!

Hello Guys~~I am a new user and I would like to ask you guys a question about my college decision. Either University of Washington at Seattle or American University
First of all, thanks you for providing such a detailed information about AU.
I am an international student from Asia and I am currently a senior student in high school now. I got accepted by AU’s WMP in Fall and Spring for Kogod School of Business and I have already paid the deposits. However, I am still waiting for the other school’s(top-choice) waitlisted response -University of Washington at Seattle.
Overall, does AU and its Kogod School of Business have a very good reputation in the U.S? Can Kogod’s students’ achievement be well recongnized by the business companies in the U.S?

University of Washington at Seattle has a lot of international students from all over the world, especially from Asia countries. The school is ranked #41 in 2009 Best National Collegs by US NEWS Report. However, the overall ranking of AU is 83 this year.
According to the Businessweek, University of Washington’s Foster School of Business is ranked #25 this year. And Kogod School of Business is ranked #28 this year.I can tell that Kogod really has a big improvement. And honestly, I really love their business school.

I visited AU last month and I actually loved their business school and the campus so much!!!Before I visited AU, I was pretty sure that UW-Seattle was my top choice. But after I visited AU, I totally changed my mind. AU’s internship programs, the active campus, and the great location in DC really attracted me. If I get into UW-Seattle and if I end up going there, I can’t directly go to their business school and it’s not even for sure to be accepted by their business school after my sophomore year. If I go to AU, I can directly go to Kogod School of Business and plus they have very good internship programs.
But there is a problem. I love both of the school but UW is more well-known in my country. If I go to AU, will I have a better chance to get employed in the U.S. after I graduate?
Would you guys please give me some suggestions…My brain is going to explode now and I really need experienced sudents’ advice.

Can anybody give me some suggestions? Please…
Thank you so much…

We attended the Weekend put on by the school. While I think this is a very interesting program I do feel that they are asking for a compromise with this program. Yes the Internships first semester can be attractive to some, but I didn’t want to pay the full tuition for what I felt was 75% of the school. It is one thing to have a list of 2000 Possible Internships, and another to go out and get the one you want. It involves 2 days a week, a full part time job.

The Tenley Campus is nice, and a short walk to AU’s main campus, it is like living off campus…most of the kids who are in the Program look like they really like it, and that is great for them, but I am not confident the main campus students allow them to blend unless they do it on their own.

Hi everyone!

I was accepted into the WMP too, but I have a question about your financial aid packages-if you don’t mind saying, I would love to hear how much you received for spring semester.

Personally, my aid package was terrible-$6500 in federal loans and work study; I plan on writing a letter of appeal as soon as possible. I hope to receive some scholarship/grant money, however, after visiting the WMP preview day (in which they told us we are, on average, lower than the main campus kids in terms of GPA and SAT scores), I doubt that they would give me any merit-based scholarships. Do they give out need based scholarships?

Basically, did any of you receive any grants or scholarships? Was it merit based?

Thanks!

My D got $5500 in loans. I asked for appeal, was told it would be 10 business days. I would encourage you to send in what you feel warrants the appeal, I send in my 2008 Tax Returns with a cover letter. FAFSA can be misleading on “other income”, especially if it is based on emergency withdrawals of IRA/Retirement Funds.
WMP can be a great program for the right student…good luck.
