Washington ?s

Ive been looking into UW more and more, but some things worry me. I would be coming from Arizona, and I would most likely know no one. This really worries me because of all of the Instate students. Is it really challenging for someone who knows no one to adjust to life in Washington

I'm outgoing and social, and will most likely be doing something with the baseball, whether that be club or intramural.

Can you guys give me any information that would calm my nerves?

Also, Im a huge sports guy so how is the sports scene?

also do a lot of people sport Udub apparel.. as in there a proud of the school they go to?

weird ?s I know but itd really help

thanks

Thnks

The sports scene is pretty big, Husky Stadium seats 72,500 people and is the biggest stadium amateur or professional in the Pacific Northwest, there is a lot of husky pride, lots of people wear the purple and the gold.

I wouldn't worry about meeting people. A lot of the local kids who go to UW try to make it at least resemble "going away to college," which means they don't go home all the time and they look for new friends in their dorms. I know if my son goes, he's unlikely to be hanging around kids from his high school. Also, there will be lots of kids from Washington but from outside the Seattle area, plus the OOS students.

Sports fans in Seattle are fickle, so you'll see some fluctuation in sport-specific hoopla depending on how well the team is doing. You'll always see big crowds at football games, and at basketball games in recent years. Baseball and soccer don't draw the big crowds, and I assume that's pretty typical. There's always a lot going on. The IMA (sports center available to all students) was recently refurbished, and is terrific.

hey your pm box is too full so i can't respond...
but i can answer a few q's on here...
1) intramurals/club is an awesome idea especially if you want to make friends quickly and make some that have your same interests....
2) UW is definitely a football school and it will only become a bigger sport school next season when jake locker starts ....baseball has a few fans,...most of their games have empty bleachers but they did have a game at safeco and there were thousands there....if you want to get basketball tickets you basically have to camp out to get them...low key sports like volleyball are fun to watch and have a lot more give aways (free tuition for a quarter if they say your student ID number)
3)every class i go to there is at least one person wearing UW gear ( most likely more than that)...granted the classes are 200 people...you see purple on campus everywhere on almost everyone (slight exaggeration, but i feel pretty confident in saying that 90% students own at least one form of UW apparel)
4) don't be so worried about instate people....im instate and one of my closest friends that i met at UW is from minnesota...others are from eastern washington, which is basically out of state....and i feel like there is quite a bit of cali people...there's no rivalry between instate and out of state thats for sure

hey sorry about that dawg, I cleared it

thanks for the responses

please pm about the transferring situation... thanks!

My s is also interested in transferring to UW and is also concerned due to being OOS and coming in Jr. year. Will he have a hard time meeting people and getting involved under these circumstances? Would he have any chance at on campus housing?

If he's proactive about meeting people, he should have no problem transferring. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved on campus, and that's probably the best way to meet new friends. There are so many opportunities to meet students at UW that the question of in-state versus out-of-state is almost irrelevant because at the end of the day everyone meets new people.

As for on campus housing, you can find out more information at http://hfs.washington.edu/student_housing/residence_halls.aspx?id=1715. As long as he applies by September 15, he will have a shot at on campus housing. The earlier you apply the better.

all around seattle you see people sportin uw stuff and few wazzu
