Washington University in St. Louis Class of 2012 Official RD Decisions

Decision: Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[] ACT: 32
[] GPA: 3.9 UW 4.1 W
[] Rank: 7/292
[] Other stats: AP Bio 4, AP English Lang 4, AP US History 3
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I loved them, and I had a bunch of people tell me they were amazing.
[] Teacher Recs: I waived my right to see them, I'm sure they were great.
[] Counselor Rec: ditto
[] Hook (if any): Not sure....
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Wisconsin
[] School Type: public, 1300 kids, not very competitive. Students usually go to UW schools
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I'm very musically talented, but I didn't send in my music supplement to wash u. I visited and attended an info session and tour, but I didn't apply for any scholarships (lack of time) so I must have not shown them I was very interested. I think that is a major factor for them in choosing a freshman class, to keep yield high.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: lack of major interest
[/ul]Other Factors: I don't know, I think I'm a pretty great kid.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congrats to all that got in and are choosing to attend! It's a wonderful school, and I'm sure you'll do well there. I'm most likely not going to accept the waiting list, so good luck to the rest of the applicants who were wait-listed!

whitelulu,

Were/are you very interested, and just feel you did not indicate so, or is that perception actually close to the truth, i.e. Wash U is not at all your first choice?

And in my opinion, I think the visit says a lot. I think it is somewhat of a myth that applying for the scholarships is taken as some kind of extra interest. I keep reading that myself, but it makes so little sense it is hard to believe. So if you are disappointed, don't kick yourself. You did what you could. Admissions this year is just insane. You just happen to be at the peak of the boomlet generation.

Waitlisted

2210 SAT, 33 ACT
3.74 UW, 4.41 W
Captain of XC w/4 yra
Prez of Interact Clubs
Good Recs

:(.........sad, but not crushed, now I'm just really worried about all my other schools

Hey Hartin,

I used to be more enthusiastic about Wash U, but I think my heart lies with Northwestern.

I wouldn't mind attending at all, I liked the school when I visited, but I wouldn't call it my first choice.

I wasn't bummed out when I got my thin envelope in the mail today, and I think that says a lot on how I truly feel.

For those accepted, exactly in what way did you "demonstrate interest" in the university? They didn't have much of a supplement to the common app, so what are they using to gauge the chances of a student accepting? Given a massive waitlisting reputation for students who don't demonstrate interest but are still qualified, what makes the difference?

*Decision:ACCEPTED *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I:2020 (didn't report it though)
[] SAT IIs:730 Bio, 630 US (ew), 700 English, 700 Spanish
[] ACT: 34
[] GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.8 W
[] Rank:1/44
[] Other stats: Cum Laude, book awards, Science Olympiad, student government, literary magazine, lots of volunteer work
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Creative
[] Teacher Recs: Don't know
[] Counselor Rec: Don't know, but she likes me
[] Hook (if any): None really. Maybe that I'm from New Orleans? Katrina and all that?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Louisiana
[] School Type: private
[] Ethnicity:White
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I'm not a clear science/math/english/history person. I'm just interested in all of them, and haven't dedicated to myself to one field.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Lots and lots of demonstrated interest. I met my admissions rep when I visited the campus, sent a thank you after the visit, and kept my rep informed with what was going on (awards/ community service stuff).
[/ul]Other Factors:
*General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:I fell in love with WashU when I visited. I don't care if it's in the midwest! It's one of my top schools, but I'm just waiting to hear from my other schools until I make a final decision. *

I'm not sure, but I think taking the time to apply for one or more of their scholarships would count as "demonstrated interest".

Accepted - in shock

ACT - 32
GPA - 4.0 UW
Rank - 1/300
Other factors- no clue, I'm not that much of a standout applicant, except maybe I come from SD

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
SAT I: 2280 (780M, 740CR, 760WR)
SAT IIs:710 US Hist, 670 MathII, 660 Latin, 610 Chem
ACT: 33
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.72 W
Rank:5/275 (not reported by school)
Other stats: NHS, Yale Book Award, District/State Literay Rally, National Latin/Greek Exam medals/ribbons, Academic Games National Championship
Subjective:good alumni interview
Essays: on my family being Catholic and Jewish in same household
Teacher Recs: great
Counselor Rec: great
Hook (if any): maybe a New Orleans hook? :-)

Location/Person:
State or Country: New Orleans, LA
School Type: Catholic
Ethnicity:White
Gender: Male
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: idk
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Demostrated interest and staying in touch with counselors at WashU. Visiting over summer.

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I am so excited b/c I thought for sure I would get waitlisted. My school had three acceptances and two waitlisted so far, and I know of at least three others from New Orleans! I was a bit miffed though that I was rejected from the Danforth Scholarship but I guess I knew it was difficult. I had several other friends rejected from all scholarships there too

S2 got his acceptance packet for engineering yesterday. Unlike S1 last year, he wants a school with strong non-STEM departments for possible double major; thus, WUSTL is one of his top choices and we'll likely pay the extra for him to attend here vs. the big scholarship schools. Still waiting for snail-mail word from 3 schools before final decision can be mande. (No online notification here--I don't think he has even bothered with the initial log in at any school).

[ *] SAT I: not submitted here
[ *] SAT IIs: not submitted here (We gambled that omitting SAT II's might decrease the chance of waitlisting for "not likely to attend" at WUSTL and other schools that didn't require them)
[ *] ACT: 35 (but lopsided--33 in math, which, while strong, is not great for WUSTL engineering applicant)
[ *] GPA: 3.9+ unweighted; 4.3ish weighted (.5 bonus for AP classes, .3 bonus for honors classes).
[ *] Rank: among top 4 in class of 150ish is the guess; I think would be reported as 1,2, or top decile. Probably the second hardest class load of anyone in history of school.
[ *] Other stats: AP Chem (4) and AP Euro (4) as Soph; BC Calc (4), AP Bio (5), AP English (4), APUSH (5) as Junior; Senior year: AP gov, econ, comparative, Physics, and english, along with DEquations and MV calc.

[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Essays: seemed ok (I think he included one here on the nature of engaging in solitary body building/weightlifting, as opposed to those who do it at a gym or as part of a group.) Why WUSTL essay seemed good. He loves St. Louis.
[ *] Teacher Recs: unknown, but likely strong
[ *] Counselor Rec: unknown, but likely strong
[ *] Hook (if any): None

[ /list][ b]Location/Person:[ /b][ list]
[ *] State or Country: TN
[ *] School Type: Private
[ *] Ethnicity: person of Pallor
[ *] Gender: Y chromosome present

[ /list][ b]Other Factors:[ /b] Senior Class President (looks better than reality!), multiple state and regional science olympiad medals all years, including frosh, and many of those medals were in building events; quirky track history--started out running x-country and doing intermediate runs, but has lifted himself into a decent throwing competitor.

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:[ /b]

To an outside observer, admission decisions at WUSTL and other grossly over-subscribed schools are capricious. To all who were disappointed, by this time next year, you will likely be quite happy with where you are at. Whatever happens, make the most of where you are at and you'll succeed. A rejection or waitlisting is primarily a function of the number of applicants and the desire of AOs to mold a class--don't take it personally and allow it to get to you.

Decision: ACCEPTED

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I wish all the colleges I applied to would send my admission letters as quickly as Wash U did.

[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Keep up the hope if you didn't get accepted. There is so much out there for us to find! Who knows what the best option is for any of us?

Decision: Accepted

[] Hook (if any): Played violin performances with Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: IL

[] Ethnicity: 1st Gen. Korean
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Good general academics and strong extra curriculars (diverse, but all strong in their own way).
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think I had a GREAT interview with the vice chancellor of Undergrad admissions.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congratulations to everyone...I was really not expecting to get in, and I'm so grateful. For those that may be disappointed, give "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann a read. "Whether or not it is clear to you, the universe is unfolding as it should." Cheesy, but I think it's nice to read something like that once in a while.

Decision: Accepted!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: N/A (I'm from Missouri; we typically take that ACT.)
[] SAT IIs: N/A
[] ACT: 34 (E: 35, M:34, R: 32, S: 33, Writing: 12)
[] GPA: 3.4
[] Rank: 1/450
[] Other stats: I dunno, Key Club President, community involvement, leadership positions, 4 year tennis letterman and state qualifier, local/state/national awards...
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Excellent
[] Teacher Recs: Fairly good, not the best
[] Counselor Rec: Um...my counselor really likes me, but she's not much of a writer.
[] Hook (if any): I suppose I am from Missouri. However, they say that they don't even consider one's state of residence. I dunno. This could also be a negative, though, because most intellectual students from Missouri apply to WashU because it is close to home. Also, my Common App essay was pretty hot.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MO
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Really good ECs. Weaknesses...I've only taken 2 AP tests so far (my high school doesn't offer many AP classes), and I failed both of them (got 2s) but I kind of hid those altogether.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Good ACT, Great essays, Pretty good ECs, Solid recs.
[/ul]Other Factors: I would like to add for all those griping about not getting in because of "substantial" financial aid, that your financial profile is housed and evaluated separately from your application. The only thing the admission people see (or are supposed to see) is whether or not you checked the box stating that you were going to apply for financial aid, which I checked and still got in...so... It is possible!
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I'm glad I got in and hope this serves as a good initial indicator for my pending applications. Furthermore, congrats to those who got in! Others...I always say that you should put all of your heart into your work, and if you are proud of what you've accomplished over the past four years, don't let a mundane judgments of your actions get you down. Be proud of yourself for what you do, not how what you do is perceived.
