Washington University in St. Louis Class of 2022 Accepted/Denied/Deferred Thread

With ED decisions being released (Hopefully) in the next week, I thought I would get this thread started. Comment your results and stats! I’m interested to hear.

I feel like we should use a format similar to what I have seen on other discussions. If anyone has a better one please replace.

Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large top ranked public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: don’t qualify for aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None really. Just a good student
Reflection

Strengths: She is unique combination of being good writer as well as being strong in Math and Science. Good test scores and grades as well as extracurricular activities
Weaknesses: No major national awards in Science or Math
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: She visited there twice - an official visit last fall and spent two weeks on campus for the PNP program. Don’t know if that made a difference but it helped her make the decision to go ED at Wash U. She also attended Wash U events here and met with her local admission rep.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
OSU - accepted. Pulled all of her other applications after her acceptance at Wash U

General Comments : Wash U was her dream school! We are all very excited and happy for her to attend!

I’ll post my son’s stats from last year. We were pretty surprised he got in, but he’s enjoying his experience and made Dean’s List first semester.

If you don’t have the best stats, I would still apply to WashU as there is an element of holistic admissions.

Objective:
SAT I: 2290 old SAT-720R 800M 770W
ACT (breakdown): N/A
SAT II: 800 Math 2, 790 Bio M, 780 USH, 740 Chinese (lol)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.67 UW/4.2 W
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn’t rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc BC 5 (AB subscore 4-first Asian kid to earn this distinction according to him), Statistics 5, Literature and Compostion 5, US History 5, Euro 5, Biology 5, Chinese (self-studied) 5, Physics 1/2 3 (hated the class, teacher tortured the kids)
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP European History, AP Statistics, AP Physics 1/2 (his school doesn’t have Physics C-they cover each part in a semester), AP Literature and Composition, AP US Government/Economics (didn’t take the tests, otherwise would have been National AP Scholar), Orchestra Honors.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): The usual-AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Commended-his school had 100 NMF/Commended in 2017.

Extracurriculars: Eagle Scout with Silver Palm, National History Bowl/Quiz Bowl, School Orchestra
Job/Work Experience: Tutored kids in his school for history-unpaid though
Volunteer/Community service: Lots of hours from Boy Scouts, but didn’t turn in the forms to get the volunteering awards. Also volunteered at the local history society/Museum
Summer Activities: Harvard Summer School, went on school orchestra tour of Europe.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9/10-wrote about Boy Scout experiences and somehow relating that to Lord of the Flies. It might have worked for UChicago if he decided to apply there.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: APUSH teacher was 10/10. She liked him and he helped a couple of friends who were doing poorly in the class get As at the end of the semester:
Teacher Rec #2: AP Bio teacher was 9/10.

Counselor Rec: 9/10
Additional Rec:
Interview: On campus interview which went well. Visited school twice.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes but we weren’t getting it.

Intended Major and College: Double major in History and Biology, possibly premed.
State (if domestic applicant): CA-Top 25 High School located in Silicon Valley that practices grade deflation-think Gunn, Palo Alto, Monta Vista, Lynbrook, or Saratoga. One of those.
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: the worst possible-Chinese
Gender: male
Income Bracket: too high for any financial aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection

Strengths: Chinese kid thinking about history. That’s pretty rare. Son’s friend who was in his APUSH class who is also Chinese got into Princeton as a history major. Also showed massive amounts of interest. Went to WashU open house in our area as a sophomore and had friends in high school who got in.
Weaknesses: UW GPA slightly low, few national distinctions/honors and did little research.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The unicorn of the Chinese kid wanting to major in History (although he is doing Biology as well).
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Withdrew all of them after being accepted ED.

General Comments: It was the luck of the draw. Somehow his application caught the eye of the adcoms. His school usually has 80 kids apply but only 8-10 get accepted. There was a kid from his school who was rejected by WashU but was accepted by Rice and is currently attending.

Admitted ED - Posting some info.

Objective:

Job/Work Experience:None
Volunteer/Community service: Lots

State (if domestic applicant):TX
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private All GIrl
Ethnicity: HISP
Gender:F
Income Bracket: High
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Sport

Reflection

Strengths:Rigid courseload in major, always A’s, athletic achievement, charitable work and leadership, sufficient test scores (most on board have much better than me).
Weaknesses: I’ve seen lots higher test scores; I have lots of ECs but few that focus on academics. No job expereince.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Besides general qualifications, history of demonstrated interest - visited school, corresponded a lot, perhaps my national origin, I will play a sport there, high school known for academic rigor, applied ED.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Did not apply to any Ivy or top 10ish school (MIT, Caltech, Stanford). Got into all schools applied to but none were as hard to get into as this one.

:))

Accepted

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5% but just barely
AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc BC (5), English Lit (4), US Gov (4), US History (4), Spanish Lang (4), Stat, English Lang, World History, Physics C
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: ^^ + a couple dual credit classes
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar (not sure if this really counts)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Soccer 9-12 (captain), newspaper 10-12 (content editor), literary magazine (editor), NHS, a couple other small things
Job/Work Experience: Camp counselor, waitress
Volunteer/Community service: Lots of working with kids
Summer Activities: Nothing major
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8/10. I didn’t have a particularly original topic but I think the essay really conveyed my personality well. Plus, I think I’m a pretty good writer
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Didn’t read. From my calc teacher. I spent a lot of time at her office hours so I got to know her well.
Teacher Rec #2: Didn’t read. From my US Gov/US History teacher who had me two years in a row.
Counselor Rec: I go to a very large school so I hadn’t even so much as spoken to my counselor before she wrote my rec.
Additional Rec: None
Interview: I was incredibly nervous (when she asked what my ECs were, I completely forgot about newspaper) but my interviewer was very nice. 5/10 though it probably wasn’t quite as bad as I remember it being

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major and College: Undecided. Arts and Sciences
State (if domestic applicant): Small, eastern state. Generally well represented.
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Just your average large public school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 200K (I think. I’m not actually sure)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope

Reflection

Strengths: I think my essay was strong. Grades and test scores perhaps. Maybe recommendations? I will have to see if I can find a way to read them.
Weaknesses: I don’t think I had any glaring weakness (other than my interview and counselor rec) but I was worried nothing in my application would stand out. ECs weren’t anything special.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Generally solid application, essays showed my writing ability and my personality, and I demonstrated A TON of interest (visited twice, applied ED, applied for scholarships, went to interest meeting, interviewed).
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ve gotten into UVM, Fordham, Pitt, and Michigan

General Comments: It’s still so surreal. To accepted applicants, I’m so excited to see you on campus! To deferred and rejected applicants, there are tons of amazing schools out there. My sister applied ED to Columbia and got rejected but now she goes to Penn and absolutely loves it. In retrospect, she thinks she would have hated Columbia. My brother goes to Emory and is incredibly happy. As of December his senior year, he hadn’t even decided to apply to Emory. My other brother ended up going to his “safety” school but ultimately got a fantastic education and had a great experience for almost no money. None of them ended up at their first choices but made the most out of their college experiences. This goes to show that you will end up where you’re supposed to end up (very cliche, I know).

@scribbledinink your ACT looks like a 35 superscore, not a 34.

You’re right. I mistyped. Should be a 34 M.

Accepted ED

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1520 Superscore

Job/Work Experience: Bike Shop Sales/technician
Volunteer/Community service: Service Club 11th, 12th, Service trip to Ecuador
Summer Activities: work
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I don’t know how to rank it but it was about working at the bike shop. I think it was pretty unique!
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Have a very close relationship, so 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: Probably good too?? 8/10
Counselor Rec: Probably pretty standard
Additional Rec:

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: nope
Intended Major and College: physics
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): one grandparent legacy

Reflection

Strengths: cool essay, woman in STEM, high gpa and course rigor
Weaknesses: subject tests (more specifically, lack thereof)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Lots of demonstrated interest. I met with my admissions officer when I visited campus and when he came to my school, kept in touch over the summer. Also, strengths above.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: U of Michigan early action, rescinded all other apps after acceptance to WashU.

General Comments: Can’t want to get started next year! Good luck to all those applying, I know these things were super helpful to me when I was looking at schools. When I visited WashU my junior year my SAT score was much lower and I thought I would have absolutely no chance of bringing it up or getting in. I would say, don’t give up hope. I’m sure luck plays a big role, but otherwise if I can do it, you can do it!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9.5, I wrote my common app about how I am a bridge between two worlds coming from a low-income, single immigrant mother background yet going to school in a very affluent, homogenous community. May not be completely polished because I changed my topic a week before submitting my common app
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10, from my English teacher of 3 years who knows me extremely well. She knows a lot about my background and I did very well in her classes. Called her my ‘school mom’
Teacher Rec #2: 8, from my Calculus teacher, I got a B in his class but always went in for tutoring and showed dedication to learning the material. He wrote me my rec for MOSTEC too which helped him get to know me
Counselor Rec: 8, she was new my junior year so I made a really big effort to get to know her but she also had 360+ recs to do. I was the first one she got to so maybe not so bad. I was always in her office for things like gov school and MOSTEC
Additional Rec: 10, from my church leader who knew me for 4 years through my consistent volunteering, also knew my family background and educational goals
9, got a peer rec from my close friend. She emphasized my dedication to learning, curiosity, and service

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major and College: PoliSci/International Studies, I wish to go into foreign service

Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <15,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first gen student, low-income, many childhood struggles brought up in essay

Reflection

Strengths: My summers were very productive- an internship, gov school, and MOSTEC helped a lot. Emphasis on community service and passion for social science. Photography business is unique. Hooks are probably helpful
Weaknesses: Test Scores :((( also I got 3 B’s my junior year
Why you think you were accepted: I think overall my application is strong, I applied for the Ervin & Rodriguez scholarships so my additional essays (focused on diversity, internship, and service) helped me become an Ervin Finalist
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far I have been accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill, USC-Columbia, Clemson, NC State, and Fordham. Deferred from UVA, Rejected ED from Columbia

General comments: I think my extracurriculars, service, essays, grades, and unique summer programs really made up for my lower test scores

@bethw21 good stuff. I hope you attend WashU.

Boom! My current junior just committed to play sports at WashU! Go Bears!

My kid is an athlete at Wash U. It is D3, which means no athletic scholarships. Also, coaches may put in a good word for your child to admissions, but in no way does this mean an automatic admission.
